Timothée Chalamet impersonates musician Harry Styles in Saturday Night Live and addresses the true meaning of his song “Watermelon Sugar.” The song initially debuted in December 2019 as part of Styles’ second album Fine Line, and was later released as a single in May 2020. A literal interpretation of the lyrics suggest that it’s about tasty fruit, but some have speculated that “Watermelon Sugar” is a metaphor for oral sex (a theory supported by the rather suggestive music video). In the eighth episode of Saturday Night Live season 46, Chalamet’s Styles addresses the rumors.

Music is one of the central themes in Chalamet’s Saturday Night Live episode. The show begins with the host reflecting about his New York upbringing and Christmas memories during a faux piano performance, and he portrays a young hip-hop artist in a “Rap Roundtable” sketch featuring Pete Davidson (with the comedic premise being that many young rappers value ad-libs more than traditional lyricism). With “Dionne Warwick Talk Show,” Saturday Night Live pokes fun at the singer’s recent social media activity, as she tweeted about the logic of Chance the Rapper’s stage name and wondered about the correct way to tweet at Snoop Dogg.

In “Dionne Warwick Talk Show,” Chalamet’s Styles appears as the first guest. His androgynous clothing seemingly references the real artist’s evolving personal style, and he describes himself as an “essential fashion man.” The Saturday Night Live version of Styles also winks at the camera while stating that “I do it for everyone.” For the main comedic premise, Warwick (Ego Nwodim) reveals that she’s unfamiliar with Styles, and wants to specifically know how she might’ve heard of him. Styles then brings up “Watermelon Sugar” and explains that even though he thinks the lyrics are about summer, some people think it’s about sex. The real Styles released a music video for “Watermelon Sugar” in May 2020.

Styles has neither confirmed nor denied the true meaning of “Watermelon Sugar.” In May 2020, journalist Savannah Walsh mused about the lyrical content (via Elle), writing “[is he] hankering for a refreshing summer treat or [is he] talking about cunnilingus?” Back in November 2019, Styles discussed his album Fine Line and the “Watermelon Sugar” lyrics with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, who asks if the song in question is about “The joys of mutually appreciated oral pleasure.” In response, Styles merely states (with a smirk), “Is that what it’s about? I don’t know.”

As for Chalamet, his Styles impersonation isn’t quite his best moment in the Saturday Night Live episode. He’s more effective in the “Rap Roundtable” bit, and even gets to show off his singing voice in “Tiny Horse.” Chalamet truly shines in the Newsmax-themed skit “Sportsmax,” portraying a TV host who refuses to believe that the New York Jets have failed to win a single game during the 2020 NFL season thus far. The most endearing Chalamet moment emerges during the opening Saturday Night Live monologue, as he speaks about his mother and reveals that she was a background actor in the classic 1991 skit “Massive Headwound Harry.”
