One of the biggest draws of Tactical Adventures’ Solasta: Crown of the Magister is that the game directly adapts its mechanics from 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. Players can almost completely recreate their favorite playable character or NPC from their own tabletop games, and it even works as a great crash course for those who have no experience with 5th Edition. Several of the basic classes from Dungeons & Dragons make an appearance in Solasta.

A favorite class among many different intellectual properties though is the Paladin. The Paladin exists as an interesting hybrid class between magic and melee, but unlike a Cleric this class leans more heavily on melee combat. There is nothing more fun than running around as a holy knight bringing down foes with heavenly powers and tanking hits like they are nothing at all. This guide shows Solasta players how to play as a Paladin.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister – How to Create a Paladin

At its core, the Paladin is a heavy fighter that has decided to use their divine power to fight against evil. The class is a perfect choice for beginner players because it is very versatile and can be used as both a tank and support. The Paladin may not be able to hit as hard as a Fighter or throw spells as powerful as a Wizard, but its ability to take hits and protect allies makes the Paladin one of the strongest in all of Solasta. Those who choose to play as a Paladin though will want to ensure that they select the correct skills and abilities to ensure that their character will be as effective as possible.

The first thing to keep in mind is that a Paladin is mostly a melee-focused fighter, so the player will want to begin by investing points in their strength ability score first. This will increase the Paladin’s ability to use strength-based weapons. Theoretically, they could increase dexterity instead and then use weapons that require that skill, they would lose out on a lot of the damage capabilities that the Paladin brings to the table. The best bet is to try and increase the strength score to about 16 and then dump dexterity.

After that, the player will then want to invest points in the charisma score as well, as this is what the Paladin’s spellcasting will be based on. Those who want to make full use of the Paladin’s spells will want to drop enough points in charisma to put it just under the strength score. Not only does this allow for spellcasting, but it also grants the Paladin better chances to intimidate and persuade people. The player then also needs to ensure that they invest a decent amount of points in constitution, as well as this, will determine hit points. The idea is to keep this right around the charisma ability. After this players will want to ensure that they keep wisdom around 10 to 12, and then they can dump both dexterity and intelligence to boost their other skills however they wish.

Solasta doesn’t offer as wide a selection as 5e does when it comes to races, so the player won’t have many choices for increasing their skills as much as possible. By far the best option when it comes to races is to select the Half-Elf as this will grant the player an additional +2 to charisma and then they can choose to increase two other scores by one point apiece. This allows the player to raise their strength a little more and grant themselves some additional wisdom.

Solasta: Crown of The Magister – Best Skills for Paladin

Ability scores aren’t the only important part of playing as a Paladin though. Players who want their Paladin to excel will want to play to the classes strengths. While it may seem like a good idea to make the character more well-rounded and try to improve skills that the Paladin isn’t good at, this actually is a poor strategy. Instead the player should invest in improving the Paladin’s natural abilities and then only use the character for those abilities. For example, rather than trying to increase the Paladin’s sneaking ability the player should instead just use another character for sneaking around.

Here are the best skills for the player to invest in:

Athletics: This is a strength-based skill, so acquiring it will ensure that a Paladin rarely fails any athletic-based checks that it comes across in the world.

Intimidation/Persuasion – These are both charisma-based skills that the player can use in different ways to get the same result. Players who want their Paladin to confront the world with violence can choose Intimidation, but those who want a more diplomatic character can opt for Persuasion.

Insight – This skill is Wisdom-based, so it isn’t quite as high as the others. It is still a great one to invest in as it will help the player determine if an NPC is lying or not.

Solasta: Crown of The Magister – Best Paladin Build

Depending on how the player chooses to play their Paladin they can alter the character in different ways. Players should ensure that they properly invest in their Paladin to get the best build possible for what they want. One extremely strong build that players can use is the Oath of the Motherland Build, which is done by selecting the Oath of the Motherland at level three. While the other two subclasses focus more on the Paladin’s support capabilities, Motherland grants much more aggressive magic attacks and skills. Those who go down this path will want to ensure that their charisma and constitution are as buffed as possible, and be ready to pummel their enemies relentlessly.

One of the first things the player will want to do is acquire the Protection Fighting Style at Level 2, which will allow them to impose disadvantage on enemies attacking allies within five feet of the Paladin. This will greatly increase the chances of an enemy failing an attack. Then once the player reaches level three they can choose the Oath of the Motherland. This will grant the player the ability to use two different Channel Divinity spells: Fiery Wrath and Fiery Presence. Wrath can set enemies whereas Presence will blind any creatures in the vicinity.

As the player levels up with this build they will want to continue increasing their charism score as often as possible to increase the amount of damage that the Paladin’s attacks deal, but they shouldn’t forget to boost their strength skill as well. One thing that is really interesting about Oath of the Motherland is that the player will pick up spells every few levels that will be added to their overall spell list, but won’t take up a spot in their prepared spells. This means that the player is able to use these at whatever level they wish while still being able to prepare the same number of standard spells.

To make the most out of this build the player should do these things:

  • Use both Bane and Branding Smite. Bane will decrease enemy damage and Branding Smite will add more damage to a player’s attacks.
  • Equip a strong one-handed melee weapon like a +2 Mace or Morningstar so that the other hand is open for using a shield. Without a shield, the player can’t use protection.
  • Remember to save Channel Divinity for powerful enemies as they can only be used once per long rest.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister can be played on PC.
