Sega has just unveiled some new details about Sonic Frontiers‘ story, including the fact that it is being penned by longtime comic book writer Ian Flynn. Fans of Sega’s Blue Blur might recognize Flynn from his work on Archie’s long-running line of Sonic The Hedgehog comics, which featured an alternate take on the franchise that became almost as popular and endearing as the Sonic games they were based on. Even when Archie parted ways with Sonic and his colorful supporting cast back in 2016, Flynn would be hired to continue his work as the lead writer of IDW’s rebooted Sonic The Hedgehog series.

Meanwhile, Sega finally drew back the curtain on the newest Sonic The Hedgehog game during last weeks’ Game Awards 2021 livestream showcase, showing the fast-paced mascot running through an open world that immediately drew comparisons to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Kirby And The Forgotten Land. The Sonic Frontiers trailer also hinted at massive bosses and featured an unusually foreboding atmosphere as Sonic sped his way through ancient jungle ruins, guided by a mysterious voice and sporting what appears to be some strange new speed powers.

According to a now-updated article from Nintendo Everything, Sega has announced that Ian Flynn is working on an original storyline for Sonic Frontiers. While details remain hazy, Takashi Iizuka, Creative Officer at Sonic Team USA, stated in a press release that:

Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike. With the effort of the talented developers at Sonic Team Japan, we’ve created an all-new style of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players will be able to explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities. There’s sure to be lots of twists and turns around every corner in ‘Sonic Frontiers,’ and we’re excited to unveil more information about the game over the coming months.

Sega had been teasing a new Sonic game as far back as May, when it released a cryptic teaser trailer for what was then believed to be titled “Sonic Rangers.” Although Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka would later admit that this revelation came too soon, he has hinted that the next title will serve as a reimagining of Sonic‘s fast-paced platforming formula. Furthermore, his team is said to be taking extra time to ensure that Sonic Frontiers lives up to fans’ expectations after the mixed reception of 2017’s Sonic Forces and the glitch-filled launch of Sonic Colors Ultimate earlier this year.

Ian Flynn has been writing Sonic The Hedgehog stories as far back as 2006, and his involvement with Sonic Frontiers will be welcome news for fans of the Blue Blur’s illustrated adventures. Between the long-awaited launch of Sonic Frontiers and Sonic’s return to the big screen in April’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2, 2022 is looking to be a promising year for The Fastest Thing Alive.
