Sonic the Hedgehog star Ben Schwartz says the redesign was how he pictured the character all along. The Sonic movie has been making waves since its theatrical release in February. In just ten days, the film earned nearly $210 million. For those that missed it, or want to relive the adventure, the film is available for digital purchase early.

From the onset, Sonic was racing against an uphill battle. Video game adaptions don’t have the prettiest reputation in Hollywood, with films such as Alone in the Dark and Doom. Detective Pikachu was a decent success, but it was going to take more than one electric rodent to sway public opinion. Sonic’s uphill battle continued when the original trailer released and Sonic’s design was the source of ridicule on social media, with fans continually mocking it. Paramount, however, listened to this negative reception and delayed the film in order to redesign the character. This would be a profitable decision, with the finished film becoming something of a financial surprise, even surpassing Detective Pikachu‘s domestic gross.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, Sonic’s voice actor, Ben Schwartz talked about the hedgehog’s Hollywood outing. Unsurprisingly, the subject of the design process came up. Schwartz states the original idea was trying to bring Sonic “into the real world.” He then notes the passionate response from fans that inspired the team to re-look at the design. Schwartz also shared that Sonic’s final redesign is how he had imagined the character all along.

But I will say the new version… when I was doing my voice the whole time I was doing it the way the new version looks. In my head, that’s the way it looked. So when I saw the first one I was like OK, but when I saw the second one I was like ‘This is in my head what the little guy looks like.’

Schwartz’s statements does bring clarity into the thought process that went into Sonic’s original controversial design. As expected, the idea was making the character as he would appear in real life. While admirable, most fans agree the design strayed too far from the iconic video game character’s iconic look. The final design looked easily recognizable, while somewhat adhering to a more real-world appearance. For those who do like the original design, though, it lives on in Sonic some toys.

Fans have been waiting for a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel announcement. The film certainly sets one up with two teases. Schwartz has also said Jim Carrey is open to returning. All the seeds are in place for a sequel. However, the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the movie industry. Chances are a sequel, should it be greenlit, won’t be announced for a little while.
