A new trailer and poster for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continue to poke fun at The Batman, parodying the DC Comics hero. Matt Reeves’ long-awaited film starring Robert Pattinson as the titular hero was released on March 4, 2022. The sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog is set to be released on April 8th, 2022.

Ushering in a new continuity for DC’s growing film franchise, many fans anticipated the arrival of The Batman in theatres after delays and rescheduling. Following a younger, less precise, and rougher Bruce Wayne in the early days of his career, Batman faces the schemes of a sinister, more mysterious take on the Riddler, portrayed by Paul Dano. While Reeves and Pattinson’s The Batman leans more heavily into a darker, grounded, and gritty world, the hero has recently become the subject of parody by one of the most unlikely characters. After the release of a Batman-inspired poster, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has continued to poke fun at the recently released DC Comics movie with two new pieces of the promotional material.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Following the release of The Batman, Paramount Pictures have uploaded a new trailer to their YouTube channel that parodies the Dark Knight. In the trailer, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) utters a Batman-inspired monologue, overlooking a police chase through the city streets as he proclaims himself “Blue Justice“. Following the Batman nod, the trailer features a number of scenes showing Sonic facing Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessy), as well as the gigantic Death Egg robot. The trailer concludes with James Marsden’s Tom Wachowski calling out Sonic for his parody of the Caped Crusader while fishing on a lake with the hedgehog. A new poster was released alongside the trailer for the film’s 4DX release. Check out the trailer and poster below.

The Sonic franchise has often responded to discussions and current trends, such as re-editing a poster released alongside the film’s Super Bowl spot after fans found an issue with it. Fans were critical of the initially released poster due to it not crediting either O’Shaughnessy or Tika Sumpter alongside their male co-stars. Following the outcry, Paramount Pictures quietly updated their poster, giving both stars billing alongside Schwarz, Elba, Carrey, and Marsden. More drastically and infamously, the original film redesigned Sonic’s cinematic appearance to more closely match his video game counterpart after fans complained the character being creepy.

As Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ramps up its marketing push ahead of its April release, its latest teaser is a perfectly-timed advertisement that takes advantage of the moment. With impressive box-office takings and high critical praise, The Batman is one of the most talked-about films at the moment, so it more than makes sense to take advantage of the discussion by having the blue hedgehog do his best impression of the character. With almost a month between The Batman and Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s release, who knows which other icons may be targeted by SEGA’s mascot next.
