Paramount has released a new Sonic the Hedgehog TV spot, apparently showing how the title character got his shoes. Releasing in February, Sonic the Hedgehog is the first Hollywood adaption of the iconic video game character. Although anticipation was low at first, many fans are now looking forward to the film thanks to the redesign trailer.

Sonic the Hedgehog has been bringing fast-paced entertainment since 1991. Next to Super Mario and Pac-Man, Sonic is probably the most recognizable video game character. Although the games have seen their ups and downs, Sonic nonetheless remains a fixture in the gaming realm. Paramount will be bringing the character to the big screen. Marketing is starting to ramp up, including merchandise. (Sonic will be getting a Build-A-Bear, playsets, and more.) The studio has also begun releasing TV spots. Last week, Paramount released a TV spot featuring Sonic asking if Dwayne Johnson is president. In the latest spot, Sonic appears to receive his shoes.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sonic the Hedgehog has received a new TV spot from Paramount Australia (via Tails’ Channel), showing the title character apparently receiving his shoes from a little girl. According to James Marsden’s character, these shoes will help Sonic control his speed. Check out the TV spot below.

It’s not known who the little girl is, but fans theorize she is the daughter of Marsden and Tika Sumpter’s characters. Sonic’s shoes serve a unique purpose in different media. In the Archie Comics incarnation of the character, the shoes were given to Sonic to lessen friction so they would never wear out. It appears Sonic’s film shoes will serve a purpose as well. Interestingly, in the original trailer for the film, Sonic was wearing actual Puma sneakers.

It’s hard to say how well Sonic the Hedgehog will do financially and critically. The character is certainly iconic, but that’s not enough to draw in general audiences. Fans have praised the redesign, which almost perfectly captures Sonic’s appearance from the games. In a massive turnaround, instead of ridiculing it, fans are now encouraging others to watch the film. The film might do decently if all the fans go and watch it, but it won’t be a smash hit if newcomers have no interest. Detective Pikachu received a decent reception, potentially ushering in a new age of quality video game adaptions. It remains to be seen if Sonic the Hedgehog does the same, and continues to break the video game movie curse. It will certainly be interesting to track the film’s box office when it releases in February.
