Director Jeff Fowler revealed Tails was planned for the post-credits of Sonic the Hedgehog before the redesign. It has been nearly two months since the release of Sonic. The film ended up being a financial surprise. It took two records from Detective Pikachu, including the best domestic box office for a video game movie.

At this point, everyone knows the story of the Sonic film. It had one of the worst social media reactions to a film on the onset. It’s not hard to see why, since Sonic’s video game design is very important, and originally the film’s take was a far cry. In an unexpected turn, the movie was delayed to make changes to the design. The result was quite fruitful for Paramount. Fans were thrilled the redesign looked much more reminiscent of the games. Even voice actor Ben Schwartz said the redesign was how he always pictured Sonic. Past the redesign, many fans enjoyed other aspects of the movie. Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Dr. Robotnik received widespread praise. Of course, one of the most talked-about moments was the Sonic the Hedgehog post-credits scene featuring the arrival of Tails. Some fans probably assumed this scene was added after the CGI changes. But that was not the case.

In an interview with Yahoo!, Fowler talked about Sonic the Hedgehog. Unsurprisingly, the subject of the post-credits scene was brought up. According to Fowler, Tails’ appearance was “planned very early on,” and was used to tell fans some of their favorite characters will appear in the future should more movies be made. He said:

There are so many characters in the Sonic universe and fans were asking about a lot of them throughout the whole process of the film. It was planned very early on that we really wanted to allude to and tease some of these other characters that fans love, just to say: “Hey guys, we love these characters and we know you love them. We’re gonna get to them. We wanted to just acknowledge how popular they are and give fans some hope that they’re coming. If we get the opportunity to tell more stories, we absolutely have a place in the movie world for some of these characters that fans know and love.

When asked if a sequel was on its way, Fowler said there’s “nothing official,” but he’s hoping so. Fans are hoping so too. With how successful Sonic was, and the amount of positive social media buzz it received after the redesign, it seems likely Paramount will greenlight a sequel. With the movie industry in a flux because of the COVID-19 pandemic, notable announcements have been scarce. Once things return to a sense of normalcy, perhaps Paramount will announce a sequel. Fans will have to wait and see.

The appearance of Tails paints an exciting future. The Sonic movie scratches the surface of what the franchise has to offer. The opening act of the movie features echidnas, a potential nod to Knuckles. With Dr. Robotnik now more resembling his video game persona, and Tails appearing, the stage is set for a bigger sequel. For those who wish to relive the adventure, Sonic the Hedgehog is available for digital purchase.
