Paramount has released a new Sonic the Hedgehog TV spot, featuring a shout-out to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Although fans were originally calling Sonic the Hedgehog disastrous, reactions are now much more positive thanks to the updated trailer with the character redesigned.

Sonic is probably the most recognizable video character after Super Mario and Pac-Man. Interestingly, aside from an anime OVA, Sonic’s upcoming Hollywood film is the first film starring the character. (He did make cameo appearances in Wreck-it Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet.) Right now it’s up in the air how well Paramount’s film will do. Fans are anticipating Sonic the Hedgehog more positively thanks to the redesign, but it remains to be seen if newcomers to the franchise will watch it. If only core fans are drawn to the theater, the film is not likely to do well. Time will tell. At the very least, many people will be happy to know that Dwayne Johnson apparently exists in the film’s world.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Paramount’s latest Sonic the Hedgehog TV spot, the Blue Blur appears bewildered and asks if The Rock is president. This may sound random or just a fun wink, but The Rock did actually consider running for the 2020 election. Check out the TV spot below, followed by Dwayne Johnson’s response.

Following The Rock’s response, the director of Sonic the Hedgehog, Jeff Fowler, chimed in and said there’s “still time” for a cameo appearance. Check out Fowler’s Tweet below.

Many fans would surely enjoy a cameo from The Rock. Although fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, they can still look forward to seeing the actor next year in Jungle Cruise, and the following year in Black Adam.

Recently, Sonic the Hedgehog received a CCXP exclusive poster, featuring something of an artistic take on the conflict between the title character and Dr. Robotnik. It remains to be seen how the battle will play out on screen. Jim Carrey’s take on the iconic video game antagonist appears to be going for a very over-the-top portrayal. For fans, this could be a fun performance, or just too silly. Live-action video game movies do not have a good reputation. Thanks to Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, that reputation could be getting better. It’s up to Sonic the Hedgehog to continue changing perceptions on video game adaptions. It will certainly be an interesting week in February when those reviews come out.
