Sons Of Anarchy followed Jax Teller and the title motorcycle club through many ups and downs over the course of seven seasons, and while he and the MC went through hell and back, none of them are the show’s victims – Jax’s eldest son, Abel, was the one who was most affected by everyone’s actions and decisions. Created by Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy premiered on FX in 2008 and was very well-received from the beginning, allowing it to live on for seven seasons, coming to an end in 2014.

Sons of Anarchy tells the story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy in the fictional town of Charming in California. The events of the series begin when Jax finds a manifesto written by his late father, John “JT” Teller, one of the founding members of the MC. In it, JT detailed his plans and vision for the club, but these were very different from those of the current President and Jax’s stepfather, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman). These opposing views and other problems within the club send Jax on a personal journey that leads him to question his path, role in the club, relationships, family, and more. Jax’s whole family was involved in SAMCRO in some capacity, and even though he tried to avoid it, he ended up dragging his sons into the mess as well.

In addition to his father being one of the First 9 and his step-father being President, Jax’s mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal), had a big role in the MC even though she wasn’t a member of it, but she was a respected and heavily influential figure. Jax’s wife, Tara (Maggie Siff), also ended up being dragged into the messy world of the Sons of Anarchy club, leading to her death, but even with all these conflicts and more, which also led to Jax’s sacrifice at the end of the series, the real victim of the show wasn’t Jax or SAMCRO, but Jax’s son, Abel Teller. Abel is the son of Jax and Wendy (Drea de Matteo) and made his debut in the pilot episode of Sons of Anarchy, where he was born prematurely and with a genetic heart defect as well as a tear in his abdomen, the latter a result of Wendy’s drug abuse during the pregnancy.

From the very beginning, Abel suffered the consequences of the actions of those closest to him, as Wendy’s drug addiction obviously ended up affecting him, and his life was only about to get all the more dramatic and complicated. At the end of Sons of Anarchy season 2, Abel was kidnapped by Cameron Hayes (Jamie McShane) as revenge against the Tellers as he mistakenly believed Gemma killed his son. Jax and the rest of the club then traveled to Ireland to rescue Abel after he was adopted by a wealthy catholic family (who were killed by the IRA shortly after). In season 4, Abel and his brother, Thomas, were put under SAMCRO’s protection when Tara was in danger, and to further complicate everything, Wendy returned and tried to reconnect with him.

In Sons of Anarchy season 5, he was involved in a car accident along with Thomas as Gemma was driving under the influence. The following season, Tara was murdered by Gemma, and in the final season, he overheard Gemma confessing to murdering Tara and apologizing to Bobby’s (Mark Boone Junior) corpse, leading Abel to start hurting himself. At the end of Sons of Anarchy, Abel left Charming with Thomas, Wendy, and Nero (Jimmy Smits) to start a new life far away from SAMCRO, while Jax killed himself on the road. Jax’s problems and suffering were a consequence of his actions and decisions, but Abel ended up paying for the terrible decisions of those around him from the moment he was born. Abel spent many years trapped in the middle of not only the conflicts of the Teller family but also those of SAMCRO (within the club and with others), making him the real victim of Sons of Anarchy. Many other characters went through the most heartbreaking and dangerous experiences throughout the show, but they were all the consequences of their own actions and those of the club, and every member had some influence in every club decision. Abel was destined to tragedy from the beginning, but hopefully, Jax’s wish was fulfilled and he stayed away from that MC lifestyle.
