Players who want to experience Return of the Obra Dinn on PS4 for cheap are out of luck, as the creator of the game has said that Sony refused his request to discount it, even though it’s cheaper on every other platform. Return of the Obra Dinn is a highly-acclaimed puzzle game about a mysterious ship that was found at sea, with its entire crew having gone missing before arrival.

The anticipation leading up to the release of Return of the Obra Dinn was high. The main character of Return of the Obra Dinn is an insurance inspector, who must examine the ship and determine the fate of the crew. The inspector has a magical stopwatch that allows them to view the moment of death for each crewmember, and it’s the job of the player to deduct how every crew member died and name their killer, in cases where they were murdered. Return of the Obra Dinn received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with many outlets calling it one of the most unique games of the current era and best detective games of all-time.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The creator of Return of the Obra Dinn is Lucas Pope, who also developed the critically acclaimed Papers, Please. October 18 marks the two-year anniversary of Return of the Obra Dinn (or Dinniversary, as Pope punnily calls it). To celebrate the occasion, Return of the Obra Dinn is discounted on almost every digital storefront. Pope was asked on Twitter about the game being on sale on the Japanese PlayStation Store, and he said that Sony refused his request to discount the game.

It’s beyond strange that Sony would refuse this request from the developer, especially as Return of the Obra Dinn is cheaper on every other platform. If given the choice, most people are going to pick one of the cheaper options. Return of the Obra Dinn isn’t a technically demanding game, so it’s not as if there is a hardware benefit for choosing the PS4 version unless it’s the only system owned.

Sony is constantly running sales on the PlayStation Store, so it’s not as if Pope’s sale request is anything unusual. It’s unclear why Sony refused the anniversary sale request, but it’s a bad look when the game costs less on the systems of its competitors. The Dinniversary sale ends today, so it’s likely too late for the PlayStation Store to change the price on time and join in.
