Sophia Di Martino, who plays Lady Loki a.k.a. Sylvie in Disney+’s Loki, recently talked about how “hugely important” it was for her when Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief came out as bisexual. The revelation came in Episode 3, “Lamentis,” where Loki and Sylvie are busy running from the Time Variance Authority (TVA) as well as a deadly apocalypse. The duo bonds on a train and chats about their romantic lives. After sharing that she’s maintained a long-distance relationship with a postman, Sylvie directs the question at Loki, asking if there were “would-be princesses or, perhaps, another prince” in his life. To this, Loki responds that he has been romantically involved with “a bit of both,” thus confirming that he is bisexual.

The fact that Loki is gender-fluid was first teased in a promotional promo before the debut of the series where a TVA file on the character explicitly mentions his sexual identity. Since then, viewers had been eagerly waiting for a direct confirmation of the same from Loki. Though this disclosure makes Tom Hiddleston’s Loki the first major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) who is openly bisexual, devoted fans of the comics were already aware of his sexual orientation.

Loki director Kate Herron and Hiddleston have expressed their excitement over this new direction for the Prince of Lies. Recently, Sophia Di Martino, in an interview with Entertainment Tonightdiscussed the Disney+ series at length. When asked about how she felt being part of the “monumental moment” when Loki came out as bisexual, Martino shared that she is very proud as the revelation was long overdue.

“Huge, it’s hugely important for me and to so many people. You know, representation is so powerful and this has been a long time coming. I have been very proud that I have been a part of finally Loki coming out.”

While the moment, as Martino said, is undoubtedly huge, that’s the entirety of the confirmation about Loki being canonically bisexual. It has already been established that the current Loki season won’t explore this revelation anymore and that the fleeting acknowledgment of the same by Loki was all fans will get. Thus despite being a leading MCU character, Loki coming out as bisexual is not much different from the scene in Avengers: Endgame, where Joe Russo appeared as an unnamed character in a scene and just quickly mentioned an offscreen date with a man.

Lokitoo seems to be aiming for a similar presentation as even though the God of Mischief did say he has been with a “bit of both” when it comes to romantic partners, Sylvie has now been presented as Loki’s love interest in the series. Thus, it is highly unlikely that even the upcoming season(s) of the show will ever present his sexuality in other ways and explore it beyond a subtle line. But despite the bleak future of this revelation, it has appeased many MCU fans who had called out Marvel for deliberately leaving an important aspect like Loki’s sexual identity out of his adaptation for the silver screen. In a way, this bombshell revelation is undoubtedly a cause for celebration, as it sure does look like the harbinger of a future where Marvel is more inclusive.
