Amazon gives a series order to I’m a Virgo, from Sorry to Bother You, director Boots Riley. A rapper, activist, and the lead vocalist for the hip hop band The Coup, Riley made his feature-length directorial debut with 2018’s Sorry to Bother You, which he also wrote. The film followed Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield), a young Black telemarketer who adopts a white voice to succeed at his sales job. The ostensibly simple switch leads Stanfield’s character into a corporate conspiracy, in which he finds himself having to stand either with his bosses or his co-workers. Now, Riley is making a move to television.

According to The Wrap, Amazon has given a series order to I’m a Virgo. The show is a dark comedy that centers on a 13-foot tall Black man (played by When They See Us star Jharrel Jerome) who lives in Oakland, California. While specific plot details remain unknown, it is noted that the series pitches itself as an “absurdist, coming-of-age joyride.” Riley will write and direct the project while also serving as executive producer. Riley first teased I’m a Virgo this past summer.

Given Riley’s politics and Amazon’s status as a corporate giant, I’m a Virgo has found itself an exciting home. Riley appears to acknowledge the unlikely match in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be working with Amazon on this project,” the director said. “This show will either have me lauded or banned and as such, I have demanded payment up front.”

Sorry to Bother You remains a relatively singular viewing experience. While it’s perhaps reasonably argued that not all the story’s points are finely examined, the overall focus on how capitalism has failed workers and society more broadly helped make the movie unforgettable. Amazon is likely banking on Riley’s previous success to draw in subscribers. At the same time, I’m a Virgowill hopefully allow Riley’s viewpoints to reach a wider audience.
