Paramount+ has unveiled the trailer for South Park: Post COVID: COVID Returns, the second part of the streamer’s exclusive event. The irreverent series was created in 1997 by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, two of television’s biggest equal opportunity offenders. It follows the misadventures of Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny, four boys living in a small Colorado town. Twenty-three seasons later, South Park has spawned video games, a full length film, and remains one of Comedy Central’s highest-rated series.

Not ones to shy away from ongoing controversy, Stone and Parker launched The Pandemic Special in September 2020, followed by South ParQ Vaccination Special in March 2021. A third COVID special—this one an exclusive hour-long event for Paramount+—premiered on November 25, 2021. Set 40 years after the events of the show, South Park: Post COVID tells the story of Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic. When Kenny dies, the gang reunites to mourn their friend and, using his research, unlock the origins of the outbreak.

Now, Paramount+ has released the trailer for the sequel, teasing what the trio is up to following Part 1’s cliffhanger ending. It also confirms a December 16 release date. At the end of Post COVID, Stan and Kyle vow to complete their late friend’s work as a physicist and perfect time travel but, as ever, Cartman threatens to derail their plans. Per the trailer, the tin foil-clad trio seems to have pulled it off, explaining to a South Park resident that they’re “from the future.” Check out the full trailer below:

The official synopsis reads, “If Stan, Kyle and Cartman could just work together, they could go back in time to make sure Covid never happened and save Kenny’s life. In South Park: Post COVID: COVID Returns, traveling back to the past seems to be the easy answer until they meet Victor Chaos.” Indeed, Victor Chaos—Kenny’s only surviving colleague—makes an appearance in the trailer as he menacingly says to Kyle and Stan, “You’re not going to like what you’re about to see.” It’s implied that Chaos is the alter ego of the friends’ old schoolmate Butters, and his presence in the trailer suggests that the character will be a major one in COVID Returns.

COVID Returns is just one of many upcoming South Park projects to stream on Paramount+. Over the summer, Stone and Parker penned a deal with the streamer to release twelve more short-form movies. The deal also renewed the series until 2027, for a total of thirty seasons. If South Park: Post COVID: COVID Returns seems a little wordy, fans shouldn’t be surprised if the animator tricksters Stone and Parker decide to lean into increasingly absurd, redundant titles for future installments. Moreover, if COVID Returns is already promising time travel, one can assume that all bets are off for the remaining twelve movies. Until then, South Park: Post COVID: COVID Returnshits Paramount+ on December 16.
