The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, perform almost all the voice roles on the show themselves. Stone has said in interviews that this isn’t because they think they’re particularly great actors, but because it’s easier with their hectic production schedule. Since they write and animate each episode the week they air, if they come up with a new scene or line right before they’re due to hit the airwaves, they can just jump in the recording studio and do the voices themselves.

But, on top of that, they are great voice actors, and they’ve each made icons out of some of their South Park roles. From Butters to Kyle to Jesus himself, Stone plays some of the show’s best characters.

10 Bradley Biggle

Better known by his superhero alias Mintberry Crunch, Bradley Biggle has been around since season three, but he didn’t make himself known to fans until “The Coon” trilogy of episodes in season 14. Unlike his friends, who are all just pretending to have superpowers (except Kenny), Bradley is revealed to be an alien named Gok’Zarah in a satire of the Superman origin story.

9 James Cameron

In the episode “Raising the Bar,” when Kyle was concerned that Honey Boo Boo had lowered “the bar,” James Cameron went on an undersea expedition to raise it. The show’s portrayal of the famous filmmaker’s seafaring adventures is hysterical, from the goofy theme song (“His name is Ja-a-a-ames Cameron, the greatest pioneer!”) to the fisheye lens used in his closeups.

8 Saddam Hussein

In the South Park movie, Saddam Hussein is the homosexual lover of Satan. In the show, Satan tried to move on and find new love with a well-adjusted guy named Chris, but he kept going back to Saddam. The season seven finale “It’s Christmas in Canada,” revealed that Hussein had become the new Prime Minister of Canada in a parody of The Wizard of Oz.

7 Father Maxi

South Park’s local priest, Father Maxi, has been heavily featured in two episodes about the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal. In the first one, “Red Hot Catholic Love,” he traveled to the Vatican and fought a giant spider to change the Holy Document of Vatican Law.

In the second one, “A Boy and a Priest,” when everyone was making pedophilia jokes about the church, he befriended Butters, who can relate to the constant mockery he faces, which further fuels the town’s jokes.

6 Gerald Broflovski

Kyle’s dad might not be as iconic as Stan’s dad, but Gerald has been responsible for some terrific storylines in South Park. As a lawyer, he can often be used as a legal mouthpiece for the creators’ social commentary.

He took center stage in season 20 with a serialized storyline in which Gerald’s troll alias Skankhunt42 provokes the ire of the town and eventually gets swept up in the 2016 presidential election.

5 Craig Tucker

Stone delivers his lines as Craig Tucker with a wonderfully droll and deadpan quality. He’s the leader of his own group of South Park kids, and he’s been in a relationship with Tweek since season 19’s “Tweek x Craig.”

Craig doesn’t often get a major role in South Park episodes, but, when he does—like the “Pandemic” two-parter about pan flute bands and giant guinea pigs—it’s always a joy.

4 Jesus Christ

Jesus has been an important South Park character since the beginning. He was a key figure in both Spirit of Christmas shorts that led to South Park’s conception. Obviously, the Jesus character is utilized whenever the show’s creators have something to say about religion, but he’s also a ninja star-throwing badass in “Fantastic Easter Special,” and he basically became Rambo in “Red Sleigh Down.”

3 Kenny McCormick

Since Kenny’s dialogue is almost always muffled by his orange parka, it would be easy to assume that voicing him would be easy. But, Kenny still has lines, and Stone has to convey the tone of each line through a muffled delivery.

Stone also nailed the revelation of Kenny’s true speaking voice as hilariously anticlimactic, while his spoof of Christian Bale’s Batman voice under the guise of Mysterion is spot-on.

2 Kyle Broflovski

Out of the four main characters, Cartman is an eight-year-old Archie Bunker, and Kenny’s sex-obsessed musings are muffled by his coat, leaving Stan and Kyle to be the show’s voices of reason. By far, Kyle’s funniest dynamic is his love/hate relationship with Cartman, which has been one of the show’s best running jokes since the beginning.

Kyle is known for fighting for what’s right, although his lengthy speeches about those causes have grated on both his classmates and the town at large.

1 Butters Stotch

While Cartman and Randy are strong contenders, a lot of South Park fans would name Butters as their favorite character. In the early seasons, Butters was just an unnamed background character. But, he’s since become almost a fifth main character, with storylines ranging from vampirism to pimping.

However, as he’s grown into the most childish and naive of the South Park kids, he’s become one of the show’s most popular characters. Parker and Stone themselves rank Butters among their favorite characters.
