Spectacular Spider-Man showrunner Greg Weisman says season 3 will never happen. The web-slinger has had a notable career in animation, dating back to the 60s. Almost every decade since has delivered a new take on the mythos. There was even a short-lived MTV Spider-Man series in 2003. Spider-Man has quite a few programs to his name, but none have generated Spectacular Spider-Man‘s acclaim.

Debuting in 2008, Spectacular Spider-Man is in many ways the most faithful adaption of the character. Like the comics, the show begins with Peter Parker in high school. A romance is developed with Gwen Stacy instead of skipping to Mary Jane Watson right away. Many of Spider-Man’s major rogues are included, from Electro to Venom, and almost all of them are given aesthetic makeovers. Indeed, plenty of passion was there to deliver a Spider-Man show for new and old audiences alike. Spectacular Spider-Man holds a special place in many fans’ hearts, which is why its cancellation after only two seasons stung. Many have continued to hope for its return. Sadly, its chances are not even slim.

Over on Twitter, Greg Weisman has squashed any hopes of Spectacular Spider-Man returning. In response to a fan’s question about more seasons, the showrunner says, “Sadly, no” to the thought of it coming back. Check out the Tweet below.

In the past, Weisman has explained at length why Spectacular Spider-Man was canceled. Simply put, Sony owns the show but couldn’t make any more episodes because Spider-Man’s animation rights were returned to Marvel. Disney purchased Marvel in 2009, the same year Spectacular Spider-Man’s second season concluded. So, Sony couldn’t continue it, and Marvel didn’t own the show for a continuation. Disney and Sony worked out a deal with Spider-Man in film, so many probably hope the same for Spectacular Spider-Man. With Weisman’s blunt response, even that seems unlikely.

Spectacular Spider-Man is but one of the other canceled programs starring the hero. The popular 90s series didn’t receive a sixth season. Ironically, the show that replaced Spectacular Spider-Man, Spider-Man Unlimited, was canceled after one season. The MTV Spider-Man show likewise saw just one season. The two modern titles, Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man are nowhere near as beloved as Spectacular Spider-Man, although they tried to maintain a similar tone. For now, fans can hope another faithful adaption of the character, emphasizing strong writing, will be produced someday.
