Spider-Man 3star Topher Grace has revealed that he had pitched a very funny idea for a trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Let There Be Carnage is the sequel to 2018’s Venom. The film is helmed by actor-turned-director Andy Serkis and follows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as he interviews serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes the host for the symbiote Carnage and a villain for Brock’s alter-ego Venom. Venom: Let There Be Carnage was released in 2021 and only received lukewarm reviews from both audiences and critics alike.

Nowadays, when the character of Venom is mentioned, Hardy’s is the face that immediately jumps into the minds of moviegoers. However, back in 2007 during the heyday of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, it was Grace who became the host of the symbiote known as Venom in Spider-Man 3. In a movie that seemed nearly overrun with villains, Grace’s take on Venom wound up being the “Big Bad” that had to be defeated at the end of Raimi’s final Spider-Man film. Since then, Grace has had a rather successful career in both film and television. Most recently, Grace can be found on the ABC series Home Economics, which follows a group of siblings living in vastly different wage brackets from each other.

In a recent interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Grace has revealed that he initially pitched a meta idea for a trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage that involved his Home Economics co-stars. In his pitch, Grace has stated that he envisioned all the Home Economics characters gathered around the television watching the trailer for the new Venom movie. Grace has said that he wanted his character to be “not into it” and wonder “who is Tom Hardy” in a delightful allusion to his previous portrayal of the character. According to Grace, the other characters would proceed to go on and on about Hardy’s many film roles and even bring up his Oscar nomination. See Grace’s full quote below:

We were all watching the trailer for Venom 2 and I just wanted my character to be like, not into it. So I’m like ‘Who is this guy? Like who is Tom Hardy?’

It seems that this was not just an idea that Grace had, but that he actually pitched to the studio. However, it was not meant to be. Grace has stated that the idea wound up getting scrapped due to the ongoing problems between Marvel and Sony Pictures. While Grace did not elaborate on what exactly the issue was, this comes as no surprise as the two companies have been having issues with each other ever since Marvel wanted to put the Sony-owned Spider-Man back in the MCU.

While it is unfortunate that fans were not able to see Grace’s hilarious idea for a Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer come to life, his involvement in future installments perhaps shouldn’t be ruled out entirely. There have been rumors surrounding the character of Venom making his way into the MCU, and the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home has proved that fans are hungry for the integration of previous iterations of superhero characters. Studios have certainly picked up on this with the now-announced return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Michael Keaton as Batman. Perhaps one day fans will get to see Grace play Venom alongside Hardy. However, until then, he can always be found in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
