A behind-the-scenes photo from Spider-Man 3 reveals the black costume initially far more resembled the comic book version. Released in 2007, Spider-Man 3 concluded Tobey Maguire’s journey as the famous comic book character. Although ambitious, the film was criticized for implementing too much into its storyline. Chief among complaints was its take on Venom, who director Sam Raimi did not originally want to include.

Debuting in 1984’s Secret Wars, the black costume was an alien symbiote that attached itself to Spider-Man. Gone was the red and blue, in favor of an all-black, sleeker design. The spider emblem also changed and was far larger. Peter eventually rejects the symbiote, and it ultimately bonds with Eddie Brock to form Venom. However, Peter would end up wearing a replica of the costume, minus the symbiote. The black outfit, as well as Venom, was the central focus in Spider-Man 3, appearing front and center in marketing. Fans may be surprised to learn the costume could have gone a different direction in the film.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Twitter user WilliamD1123 had a couple of lengthy Spider-Man 3 threads back in 2018, compiling behind-the-scenes information. Perhaps one of the most exciting things is an unused Spider-Man black costume was designed to be more accurate to the comics. This is seen in the costume test photo below.

Spider-Man has worn quite a few costumes over the years, from the Iron Spider to the Bombastic Bag-Man. The most popular (aside from his classic red and blue) is the black costume. Interestingly, the Venom-styled insignia seen in the image above would not be used in favor of something similar to the other spider logo in the photo. In the film, the black costume is little more than a black covering over Spider-Man’s regular outfit. From a story standpoint, it makes sense for the symbiote’s look to resemble the main outfit. However, it still would have been a treat to see a more comic book accurate look, as it would have been likely more visually appealing than a black version of his usual look.

Since Spider-Man 3, the black costume has not been adapted in any film. Sadly, the symbiote story doesn’t seem likely to happen because Venom is already established. However, as fan art has shown, that doesn’t mean Peter can’t don the black suit at some point. One can easily picture the Venom symbiote bonding with Peter when the characters hopefully meet at some point in the future. It probably won’t be the iconic storyline, but it would be fantastic to see another symbiote Spider-Man on the big screen.
