WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Spider-Verse #2.

If you can imagine any version of a Spider-Man character, it probably exists somewhere in the Spider-Verse. There’s everything from Spider-Gwen, to Spider-Ham, to characters that will probably never show up in the MCU, like Victorian Spider-Man.

With an expanding universe, there’s a lot of potential to completely change and shake up beloved heroes and characters. In Spider-Verse #2, Peter Parker’s sweet, loving Aunt May is the latest spider-family member to be reimagined. Aunt May is radically turned into a nightmare – becoming a terrifying version of Carnage.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the new Spider-Verse series, Miles Morales is hopping through the multiverse in order to stop corruption spreading in realities and to locate the person able to fix the Web, Annie May Parker. His adventures take him to an Earth where Aunt May was the one bitten by a radioactive spider as the previously introduced Spider-Ma’am. She’s going on with her day with Peter and Uncle Ben when darker, alternate versions of the characters pop up from a portal.

The newest versions of Aunt May, Peter and Ben are nightmarish-looking and obviously evil. Aunt May is the most terrifying of all, as she’s bonded with the murderous Carnage symbiote. She’s got sharp teeth, claws, and the shifting powers of every Venom derivation. Meanwhile, Ben is covered in blood and ready to fight, while Peter’s eyes are glowing. A new version of Miles also eventually joins the fight. The group is there for a bad time.

Aunt May might be the last character you would expect to make a dark turn, but this is the Spider-Verse we’re talking about – so there had to be an evil version of her out there somewhere. However, Aunt May being a killer possessed with the Carnage symbiote is completely unexpected. It is a smart bit of storytelling that shows anybody can have dark doppelgangers throughout the multiverse – even Peter’s sweet old Aunt.

Thankfully, Spider-Ma’am figures out a way to send Carnage Aunt May and her minions back through a portal back to their own universe. The evil May laments that she can’t lose and that “there’s a universe in which we don’t lo–,” before getting sucked back to her own Earth for good.

Anybody possessed by the Carnage symbiote represents a huge problem, but Aunt May might be one of the biggest future issues Miles and the rest of the Spider-Verse will have to worry about going forward. Maybe, she’ll show up when Spider-Verse 2 is released in 2022. Regardless, this likely won’t be the last time we see the Carnage Aunt May.
