New fan art reimagines the Spider-Man: Homecoming poster in the style of Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man comic book series. Spider-Man: Homecoming was the first solo outing for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man after his introduction in Captain America: Civil War. Critics and audiences praised both the standalone film and Holland’s initial appearance, calling him the perfect Spider-Man for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His relationship with fellow Avenger Tony Stark/Iron Man was also a standout. Following the emotional events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Holland reprised his role for Spider-Man: Far From Home last summer.

Though a third film in the MCU Spider-Man series is on the way next year, for awhile that was in jeopardy. After Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony and Marvel failed to reach a new agreement for the character, meaning any future appearances by Holland wouldn’t be in the MCU. Luckily, a new deal was eventually made, and Spider-Man will show up in at least one more MCU film in addition to Spider-Man: Homecoming 3. Unfortunately, little is known about that film at this time, as production won’t begin until September at the earliest due to the coronavirus.

As the wait for the next Spider-Man movie continues, artist John Black has provided a welcome distraction by remaking the Spider-Man: Homecoming poster in the style of Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man cover. In it, Peter Parker, Iron Man, MJ, and others are given classic Marvel makeovers, while still maintaining the spirit of the original poster. Check it out below:

This poster was a fun challenge. I tried to streamline some of its ideas. I especially like remaking these when I get to reimagine iconic characters like MJ. #spiderman #ironman #remake #marvel

The Spider-Man: Homecoming poster is the latest of several Marvel and DC posters redone by Black in the classic comics style. Previously, the artist reimagined the posters for Captain America: The First AvengerBlack Panther, and Avengers: Endgame, among others. All pay tribute to the film’s comic book origins, in this case, by remaking the cover itself. As noted by Black in his caption, it’s especially interesting to see Zendaya’s MJ as she would look in the comics. It’s also a good reminder of the outside-the-box casting of Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, since, as shown in the new version of the poster, she’s much older in the comics.

As the MCU is currently on an unexpected release hiatus, it’s great artists like Black continue to generate excitement via fan art. It should also help audiences looking forward to Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 next year, when they’ll finally get to see Peter Parker, MJ, and their other favorite characters again. Until the MCU returns to theaters with new content, fan art like Black’s is a great alternative.
