Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 Gets Spring 2022 Release Date

Sony Pictures Animation announces the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 release date, with the sequel swinging into theaters in 2022. The animated superhero adventure film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, introduced viewers not only to Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), but a whole multiverse of Spider-People, including Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). Though the other Spidey characters all returned to their respective universes at the end of the movie, Sony announced a sequel following Miles Morales – which comes as little surprise given Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won an Oscar.

In addition to the direct Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel, which is said to explore more of the romance between Miles and Gwen that was teased in the first movie, Sony is also developing a spinoff. The female-led Spider-Verse spinoff will follow Spider-Gwen, and could introduce the likes of Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, Cindy Moon aka Silk and May Parker aka. Spider-Girl. Plus, there are reportedly Spider-Verse TV shows in development within this unique animated multiverse. Now, Sony has announced an important aspect about the Spider-Verse sequel: When fans will be able to see it.

On Twitter, the film’s official account revealed the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 release date as April 8, 2022 along with a GIF of Miles Morales’ Spidey logo. See the tweet below.

The April 2022 release date for the sequel is a little less than two and a half years from now, and will be about three years and four months after Spider-Verse originally hit theaters. It’s likely the time is needed to work on the film’s animation. After all, different styles were used for the different characters from across the multiverse in order to animate each distinct Spider-person. In fact, new animation technology was invented to bring Spider-Verse to life, affirming just how much of a visual feat the first film is. However, that means the sequel must look just as good, and with Spider-Verse 2 no doubt introducing other Spider-Man characters from around the multiverse, the creative team will need to develop those characters’ distinct styles as well.

Considering how much of a masterpiece Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse turned out to be, Sony and the filmmakers are no doubt aiming to deliver something just a magnificent in the sequel. But that takes time. Thankfully, it seems Sony is willing to give the creative team all the time they need in order to create Spider-Verse 2. While it remains to be seen whether the sequel will be as well-received as the first film – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse reviews were overwhelmingly positive – fans can rest assured the filmmakers have the time they need to make the best followup possible. Now fans just have to survive the two and a half year wait until Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 hits theaters.
