Spider-Man: Miles Morales After-Credits Scenes Explained

There are multiple after-credits scenes in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, with scenes touching on not only the emotional conclusions of the game’s story but also setting the stage for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This isn’t surprising, because Marvel dominates pop-culture. With a steady supply of excellent content including movies, comics, games, and more, the brand is everywhere. In particular, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, has seized the public’s imagination and the numerous after-credit scenes that follow its films have become a phenomenon in and of themselves, providing insight into the universe and characters. Insomniac’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales proudly continues this tradition, as it offers multiple after-credits sequences that not only tease future projects, but provide catharsis as well.

At the end of Spider-Man: Miles Morales campaign, Miles tastes a bittersweet victory. Miles saves Harlem, helps his criminal uncle Aaron Davis find redemption, and emerges a hero, fully embraced by the city. However, he loses his dear friend, Phin. Lost in vengeance, Phin became the Tinkerer and tried to destroy Roxxon at the cost of the New York’s citizenry. She ultimately realized the error of her ways and sacrificed herself to save the city.

When the credits roll on Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the emphasis is purely on Miles’ ascendancy: he and Peter swing off together to fight crime together as equals, rather than master and student. It’s a good ending that captures Miles’ growth, but it lacks the emotional catharsis one would expect given the weight of the story’s climatic scenes. Luckily, the after-credits contains a scene that brings everything together, perfectly.

Miles’ Morales True Ending

After the credits, Spider-Man: Miles Morales starts up again, showing Miles at Trinity Church. He places the science award he and Phin won together atop the church tower and says goodbye to his beloved friend, setting the tone for what is to come in the game’s epilogue.

Following Miles farewell to Phin, players unlock a couple new side quests. One simply unlocks the adorable Spider-Cat suit, while the other is the game’s heartfelt finale. Miles’ mom sets up a scavenger hunt for Miles to complete. This scavenger hunt involves visiting locations dear to Miles’ family and each place contains a recording from Miles’ deceased dad, Jefferson Davis.

The recordings reinforce the love in Miles’ family while reminding the player of the profound loss Miles has suffered. This culminates with the final location, a basketball court where Miles used to play ball with his family and Phin. Upon going here, and listening to his dad’s encouraging words, Miles tears up and reminisces. A small cutscene then unfolds depicting a family day at the court. It’s beautifully rendered and underpinned by the fact that everyone present, other than Miles and his mother, is either dead or in prison.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Tease

Prior to the epilogue, Spider-Man: Miles Morales also includes a mid-credits sequence that sets up the upcoming sequel. At the end of the original Marvel’s Spider-Man it was revealed that Harry Osborne was sick and being treated using a symbiote. The Miles Morales’ sequence builds on this revelation by showing Norman Osborne demanding that his son be released from the vat that currently contains him and the symbiote. Furthermore, the doctor treating Harry is shown to be Curt Connors, the kindly doctor who eventually becomes the Lizard. In the comics, Curt is a mentor to Peter, something that could be true in Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe as well. If this is the case, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may contain not just one, but two, personal villains for Peter to contend with: a symbiote infected best friend and a deranged former mentor.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales delivers a wonderful, web-filled adventure and fulfills the Marvel tradition of giving the audience something meaningful after the credits roll. The sequel tease is fun, to be sure, but it’s the emotional epilogue that deserves true praise. By concluding with Miles reminiscing about his family, the game honors Miles journey and reminds players that, like Peter before him, Miles is a hero formed through tragedy.
