The cast of Spider-Man: No Way Home react to Lizard being hit by an invisible punch during the movie’s trailer. Tom Holland’s web-slinger is the third version of the character to appear on the big screen since Tobey Maguire first brought Peter Parker to life in Sam Raimi’s beloved trilogy from 2002-2007. Andrew Garfield was the next actor to fill out the suit for two The Amazing Spider-Man movies before his time was cut short. Now, the MCU’s No Way Home brings these three generations together in one movie with appearances from past villains, and possibly the Spider-Man actors themselves.

Since Marvel or Sony have yet to confirm anything, the speculation that the two past Spider-Men will be reprising their roles in the upcoming MCU movie has been fervent. Rumors began to heat up in earnest with the release of the second trailer. While it didn’t feature any overt reveals, fans mined the footage for evidence, homing in on one specific moment in the Brazilian version of the No Way Home trailer in which Lizard is punched seemingly by nothing, leading many to suspect that either Maguire or Garfield’s Spider-Man was digitally removed from this shot.

Now, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Spider-Man: No Way Home cast react to this fan theory. After Kimmel plays the specific moment from the trailer for them, each cast member has their own unique reaction, with Ned Leeds-actor Jacob Batalon laughing hysterically at the apparent editing mistake. Holland and Zendaya try their best to provide a believable explanation, with the former claiming it was a bird and the latter suggesting it was debris, though Benedict Cumberbatch comes up with the funniest explanation. Read each of their reactions below:

Holland: I know what that is actually. It’s a bird.

Zendaya: You see all that debris? There’s tons of explanations. There’s tons of things that would cause that.

Cumberbatch: To me, I think it’s just [Lizard] realizing, “Wow, I need to use some deodorant.”

Batalon: There’s definitely some debris from the statue, Jimmy. You’re reading way too into this.

After gauging each of their reactions, Kimmel proposes a wild theory to explain the trailer’s mysterious moment, suggesting it could be Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, delivering the blow to Lizard’s maw. While a Fantastic Four movie is in development at Marvel Studios (from Spider-Man director Jon Watts) and their introduction into the MCU is expected to come in the near future, virtually no one is expecting it to happen in No Way Home. That would certainly be a greater shock than the appearance of Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Men.

Those who have been following No Way Home‘s promotional campaign closely are well aware that the cast is forbidden, likely due to an NDA or other legal contract, from discussing Maguire and Garfield’s involvement in the movie, and they have only gotten better at dodging questions as the press tour has gone on. At this late in the game, they would be remiss if they let something slip now. The wait for concrete answers is almost over, as Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in theaters this week.
