Spider-Man: No Way Home costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays explains the process behind recreating Tobey Maguire’s suit. Maguire made his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s 2002 film before going on to star in two sequels. Following abandoned plans for a Spider-Man 4, Sony rebooted the franchise with Andrew Garfield in the titular role. Now, Tom Holland is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s webslinger, who recently met his predecessors in Jon Watts’ final installment in the Homecoming trilogy, No Way Home.

Taking place after Far From Home (2019), No Way Home picks up with Peter in the aftermath of Mysterio revealing his identity as Spider-Man and implicating him as a murderer. When he goes to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help, the subsequent memory spell goes awry and brings a handful of Sony villains/heroes into the MCU. These characters include Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), Electro (Jamie Foxx), and a pair of familiar webslingers. That said, No Way Home marks the first time the now 46-year-old Maguire has worn the Raimi-verse’s silver-webbed suit since Spider-Man 3 (2007).

In a Spider-Suits featurette (via DavidATS), No Way Home costume designer Hays (Captain Marvel, Blade) talked about recreating the spandex one-piece from the original Spider-Man (2002). According to Hays, the suit had to be “completely redone” and was granted zippers to make it more comfortable and easier to take off. Read the full quote below:

“Tobey’s Spider-Man had to completely be redone because the suit was absolutely falling apart, because it was done in 2001 technology,” said Hays. “We put zippers in a slightly easier position, so we made it a little bit more comfortable and easy to take off. It was very funny when [the Spider-Man actors] were talking to each other and each of them was jealous of the other one’s [suits].”

Hays called dressing each Spider-Man as “an incredibly precise process” as every costume has many pieces. Most people are just [like], ‘Oh, they’re unitards.’ It’s so much more than that. It’s the question of staying true to what it was in the previous movies, and yet make it appealing to the audiences of 2021.” In an interview released earlier this year, Maguire described wearing the Spider-Man costume again in No Way Home, 14 years after he last put it on in 2007. While he did find it vaguely uncomfortable to put on, once the “goofiness” dissipated, the suit—which he called a “blessing“— helped him to get back into character.

With its focus on great power and responsibility, No Way Home awarded Maguire’s character closure. Ironically, the film has also reinvigorated interests in both his and Garfield’s iterations of Spider-Man. It remains to be seen if the fandom’s cries for future appearances will have any effect on Marvel Studios/Sony’s plans. Given Maguire’s now-confirmed multiversal status, it’s certainly possible that the actor’s web-slinger will cameo in Raimi’s upcoming film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, on May 6. Until then, the Spider-Suits featurette as well as a slew of special features are available to own when No Way Home becomes available on digital March 22 and 4K UHD April 12.
