Spider-Man: No Way Home has set itself another record, this time smashing home digital sales records within the first week of release. Easily one of Marvel’s most ambitious films since Avengers: Endgame, the joint Sony and Marvel Studios project is already the highest-grossing film of 2021 and the sixth highest-grossing film of all time. It is also expected to break a coveted $800 million domestic US box office record, making it only the third such film to do so after both Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, much of No Way Home’s success is due, in no small part, to the return of characters from previous iterations of the Spider-Man franchise. Not only did former villains like Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, and Rhys Ifans’ Lizard find themselves drawn into Tom Holland’s universe, but the film also featured the highly anticipated return of both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as their respective Spider-Man variants. The film also worked a special cameo appearance of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock (aka Daredevil) in for good measure.

An exercise in pure, unabashed fan service, Marvel and Sony’s plans for their third collaborative Spider-Man film certainly paid off big. Not only has the film grossed $1.886 billion worldwide, but now Deadline is reporting that the film’s recent digital release has resulted in it selling over 2.1 million units in the US within its first week alone. This suggests an approximate US revenue of $42 million within the first seven days of the film being available for purchase.

Of course, fans who have seen the film will probably not at all be surprised with the amount of success it is currently enjoying. It also serves to demonstrate to both Sony and Marvel Studios, exactly how profitable their shared creative management of the character can be. At one stage there were serious questions over the character’s future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it almost seemed that Spidey was destined to leave the MCU altogether. Thankfully, Holland took it upon himself to appeal directly to Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony Chairman Tom Rothman to resume negotiations after they had stalled.

If No Way Home’s financial performance is any indication, Holland’s heroic appeal to keep the character within the MCU was more than justified. With this sort of success, it seems logical that Sony and Marvel will look to continue their partnership and audiences can expect much more of their favorite web-crawler on their screens. There are even suggestions that fans can expect the introduction of another Spider-Man in the MCU, in the form of Miles Morales. In the meantime, Spider-Man: No Way Homecontinues to prove itself a most profitable jewel in Sony and Marvel’s shared crown.
