Warning: this article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now the highest-grossing U.S. movie of 2021. Directed by Jon Watts, the concluding chapter of the “Homecoming” trilogy starring mainstays Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon has revitalized the theatrical box office in a big way, especially for post-pandemic times. Spider-Man: No Way Home has already broken numerous box office records, including securing the second-biggest opening weekend of all time, besting the previous record-holder, Avengers: Infinity War.

No Way Home has pulled in massive audiences all over the world, capitalizing on a swing-for-the-fences storyline that brings back characters from previous Spider-Man films, including the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield-led films. Stars like Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans, and Thomas Haden Church reprise their villain roles from previous films, while Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange plays a key role in the proceedings. The multiverse aspect of the film has served as a game-changer for the MCU, with No Way Home breaking new ground in terms of how that’s used.

Now (per Deadline), Spider-Man: No Way Home has swung a new record, becoming the highest-grossing U.S. film for 2021, surpassing the previous record-holder No Time To Die, and doing it in only six days. The film has made $813.9 million globally through Wednesday with much more expected over the holiday weekend, likely to surpass $1 billion by the close of the year. The top films of the year globally are from China, including The Battle at Lake Changjin (the most expensive film ever made in China to date), which is currently at $902.5 million, and Hi, Mom at $822 million. It’s entirely possible that No Way Home could surpass both by the end of the year.

The success of No Way Home has spawned plenty of chatter about where the franchise will go next, with talk of a new Spider-Man trilogy with Tom Holland. In addition to the likelihood of more Holland-led films, there’s also a number of Spider-Man universe films on the way, including Morbius with Jared Leto and Kraven The Hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. There is also a sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which is now a two-part film with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – Part One coming in 2022 and Part Two coming in 2023.

It’s been a great year for Spider-Man films, as Venom: Let There Be Carnage will close out the year with about $500 million globally and Spider-Man: No Way Home likely to cross over $1 billion by the end of its run. Both of those films made a connection to one another as well, with the multiverse bringing Holland’s Spider-Man and Hardy’s Venom closer and closer to appearing together on the big screen. For fans, seeing a proper Spider-Man/Venom movie is at the top of the list and both Sony and Marvel appear to be teeing that up. Regardless of which direction the franchises go in, the success of both films is going to keep the webs spinning for Spider-Man and his amazing box office friends.
