Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home ends on a sad note, but the film may have already teased Peter Parker and MJ reuniting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) makes the ultimate sacrifice. After meddling with Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) memory wipe spell, Peter Parker inadvertently allows past Spider-Man villains to enter the MCU. Unfortunately, the villains are drawn in from other universes because they know Peter Parker is Spider-Man. So, in the end, Parker asks Doctor Strange to cast a spell to make everyone forget him. Though this stops the other-worldly visitors from attacking the MCU, it also makes everyone in Peter Parker’s life, including Zendaya’s MJ, forget him.

Peter Parker and MJ finally became a couple in Spider-Man: Far From Home. In the film, Parker buys MJ a Black Dahlia necklace, and the pair eventually confess their feelings for one another. Unfortunately, however, their happiness is short-lived. In a post-credits scene for the film, the world learns about Peter Parker’s Spider-Man identity, bringing chaos into the couple’s lives and even hindering their college dreams. So, of course, Peter Parker goes to Doctor Strange for help in the situation, leading to all of the Multiverse chaos in No Way Home.

Despite the world forgetting about Peter Parker, one No Way Home moment hints at a reunion with MJ. At the end of No Way Home, Peter finds MJ and Ned (Jacob Batalon) and prepares to reveal his history with them. However, he doesn’t go through with the plan. After seeing the pair happy and talking about college, he decides to stay out of their lives. While it seems like it’s goodbye for MJ and Peter Parker, the movie subtly reveals there’s still hope for the pair. Despite not remembering Peter, MJ still wears the Black Dahlia necklace he bought for her.

MJ isn’t wearing the necklace by mistake. Though she can’t remember Peter, the necklace is special to her for some reason. That reason is likely forthcoming in future Spider-Man films. Since Doctor Strange was reluctant to cast the spell in No Way Home to make everyone forget Peter Parker, he could’ve included a loophole for Parker’s loved ones to potentially remember the web-slinger. So the necklace could be essential for MJ finally remembering Peter Parker’s identity after Spider-Man: No Way Home’s ending. It could help her memory come back or later prove Peter Parker’s story if he decides to tell her the truth.

The fact that No Way Home borrows heavily from “One More Day,” a story from Marvel’s comics, is telling. In “One More Day,” characters similarly forget Spider-Man’s identity. However, that doesn’t last for everyone. Since some characters in Marvel’s comics eventually learn that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, it makes sense that the same would happen in the MCU. And, if anyone is going to remember that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, the person still carrying his necklace in Spider-Man: No Way Home is a strong candidate.
