A new video gives a brief look at a much more action-packed introduction for Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Released in December, Spider-Man: No Way Home shattered box office records and was a hit with both fans and critics. Wrapping up Tom Holland’s Homecoming trilogy, the film sees Peter enlist the help of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to make the world forget that he’s Spider-Man, which accidentally unleashes the multiverse.

When Doctor Strange’s spell goes wrong, a host of past Spider-Man characters come tumbling into Holland’s Spider-Man‘s world, including the likes of Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). Even Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return as their own respective versions of Spider-Man. Although each villain presents a considerable challenge to Holland’s Peter, it’s Green Goblin who proves to be the most dangerous. Green Goblin kills aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and very nearly kills Tobey’s Spider-Man before ultimately being defeated by Holland.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a new VFX breakdown video with Vanity Fair, VFX Supervisor Kelly Port explains that they initially planned for a more action-packed introduction of Dafoe’s Green Goblin. In a “previs” sequence, which is essentially a digital mock-up of what a scene could look like featuring rudimentary visual effects, Port shows that Spider-Man and Green Goblin almost had a more drawn-out fight on the bridge instead of what ended up in the movie. In the final film, Green Goblin blows up some cars with a pumpkin bomb and audiences get a quick glimpse at the character on his glider before Peter gets whisked away through one of Doctor Strange’s portals. “We weren’t sure if we should introduce him at the beginning and have a big role in the action and the fighting,” Port explains. Fortunately, using previsualization, director Jon Watts and the creative team can get an idea of what a scene will look like and how it will fit into the larger movie without sinking a bunch of money into creating finished digital effects. Ultimately, as Port explains, they decided to go for the “big reveal” at the end of the sequence instead.

While audiences likely would’ve loved a three-way fight between Holland’s Spider-Man, Green Goblin, and Doc Ock, it’s understandable why the sequence was cut. By keeping Green Goblin’s introduction relatively short, Holland’s Spider-Man gets to have a fun one-on-one battle with Doc Ock, which is the only real fighting those two do in the entire movie. With so many characters to juggle, it’s not entirely surprising the sequence was trimmed, but, fortunately, Spider-Man gets to have two standout fights with Green Goblin later in the film. Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available to watch on digital.
