WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending was spoiled 11 months ago. The film’s marketing did an effective job covering up the film’s biggest surprises despite having to contend with numerous leaks. Unfortunately, one such leak just happened to reveal the ending.

Delivering on its promise of being an epic of massive scope, Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Tom Holland’s Spider-Man contend with several villains from past films as he works to reverse the damage done by Mysterio revealing his identity. While he ultimately loses Aunt May to Green Goblin in the process, he manages to defeat the villains with help from Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men. Unfortunately, Holland’s Spider-Man still has to make one more sacrifice before putting an end to the chaos.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As it turns out, Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending was actually spoiled via a leak in a Twitter post. In the post, set photos show Tom Holland as Peter walking in the snow, while Zendaya’s MJ is seen working at what appears to be a coffee shop. Those who have seen the film know that this moment occurs towards the end after Peter makes his heartbreaking decision to have the whole world forget his secret identity, including those closest to him.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s climax, after the Spider-Men defeat Green Goblin and cure all the other villains, a crack in the multiverse begins to open, which causes several other villains (including Spider-Man‘s Rhino) to start to come through. To prevent this from happening, Holland’s Spider-Man tells Doctor Strange to cast the spell that erases everyone’s memory of him as Peter Parker, which he does. This is what leads to the scene with MJ and Peter living separate lives. Unfortunately, thanks to the leaked set photos, this separation was already hinted at, giving audiences a clear indication of how the film might end.

In the scene, Peter is planning on heading to the coffee shop where MJ works after the two promise to find each other after the spell is cast. Coming prepared with a note, Peter is about to tell MJ everything when he sees her and Ned having been accepted into MIT. This prompts him to ultimately go back on his promise, likely believing that they are better living their lives without him in it. Although the original leak revealed none of this detail, the implication of the set photos was clear – Peter and MJ are no longer as close as they appeared in trailers. However, given the connotations of the couple’s separation, there’s no doubt that the premature reveal may have lessened the finale’s emotional impact for some.

Fortunately, unlike other leaks, the Twitter post doesn’t reveal anything about Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending beyond the set photos. However, if fans did happen to see the leak, they at least knew to expect it and were likely able to piece it together as the film went on. Ultimately, the hints about Peter and MJ’s relationship have not lessened the monumental impact Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently having on the world, especially in the context of all the other exciting reveals. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that, with the benefit of hindsight, the leak was perhaps more significant than many people may have guessed.
