The Spider-Man: No Way Hometrailer has several significant reveals about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but it also trolls fans over leaks. No Way Home continues teasing a universe-altering story for the MCU. The latest trailer shows more of the fallout after Peter Parker (Tom Holland) messes up Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) memory wipe spell, and past Spider-Man villains enter the MCU. The footage shows more scenes of the villains, including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman, and Rhys Ifans’ Lizard. Jamie Foxx’s Electro also gets an entirely new design. Everything then culminates in a massive battle, which seemingly leaves MJ (Zendaya) in trouble.

For months, leaks have hinted that past Spider-Man actors would appear in the upcoming film as well. Images going around the internet supposedly show both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning to their roles as Peter Parker, helping Holland’s version of the character take on the invading villains. In addition to the apparent leaks, the trailers constantly drop Easter eggs about the characters’ appearances. For instance, Tom Holland appears in an outfit that eerily matches Maguire’s from a previous Spider-Man film.

At this point, No Way Home is almost trolling fans about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appearing in the MCU film. In the new trailer, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man takes on the MCU’s invading villains on construction near the Statue of Liberty. And despite claims that the No Way Home leaks with Maguire and Garfield are fake, the trailer includes similar-looking scenery. Most obviously, scaffolding that appears in the leaks also shows up in the new footage. Additionally, various scenes in the trailer appear to have edited out the other Spider-Man actors. Lizard even gets attacked by an unseen force, which is possibly Garfield’s Peter Parker after Marvel erased him from the scene.

At this point, Marvel is blatantly messing with fans. Thus far, those behind the film have vehemently denied that the past Spider-Man actors appear in the movie. Garfield himself has shut down questions several times in interviews. Yet, despite those denials, the trailer includes footage that essentially confirms the leaks. Marvel also clearly edited out characters from scenes, which are likely the other Spider-Man actors. As a result, the trailer is trolling fans, basically stringing them along about the actors appearing before shying away from confirming it.

If Marvel truly wanted to keep the actors’ possible appearances in the film secret, the studio wouldn’t have included scenes where Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appear edited out. With Spider-Man: No Way Home clocking in at around three hours, plenty of other footage should be available. Instead, Marvel chose to erase characters from scenes, pretty obviously. The move is essentially gaslighting fans into thinking the characters aren’t actually in the scenes when there appears to be clear evidence that they are. Thus, the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer reveals the film’s biggest villain is Marvel.
