A TikTok user has dropped a new viral video imagining how Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield might react to Tobey Maguire’s web-shooters from the 2002 Spider-Man. Although The Amazing Spider-Man and the MCU’s Spider-Man films follow the comics and have their Peter Parker shoot webs from a device attached to his wrist, in 2002, Sam Raimi chose to have his Spider-Man shoot webs organically from his wrist as part of his mutation. With the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer breaking records to become the most-watched trailer ever, it’s no surprise that fans are thinking about all the implications of the Spider-Man multiverse coming together.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While it’s not yet officially confirmed, it’s been heavily rumored that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home reprising their roles as previous iterations of Spider-Man. In fact, some theorize that Doc Ock is actually talking to Maguire’s Spider-Man in the trailer. If Spider-Man and Doctor Strange’s multiverse-folding spell gone wrong does indeed throw these three Spideys into the same room, there will certainly be an opportunity to compare and contrast.

A new video, which TikTok user cameronsilas recently posted on their feed, does that very thing. Using the “oh my god what is that?” meme audio, cameronsilas points out one of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film’s biggest discrepancies from Marvel mythology: his web-shooters. Depicting Garfield and Holland’s Spideys reacting to Maguire’s organic web-shooters, this video really does highlight how gross that concept actually is, in universe.

Raimi’s decision to lean more into his B-movie background with this particular body-horror detail (and Marvel’s quick reversal in later Spider-Man films) has long been a source of conversation among Marvel fans, but this TikTok may be even more prescient than anybody realizes. If there is a joke about the web-shooters in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is entirely possible given the MCU’s sense of humor, the screenwriters can also draw on Holland’s previous statements on Garfield’s Spider-Man web-shooters. Once upon a time, he described them, saying they’re “so small and so compact, it didn’t really make much sense to me.”

If Garfield’s Spider-Man goes in for the kill on a web-shooter joke, he might just find himself in Holland’s crosshairs. There certainly is a well of material to mine just from the web-shooters, let alone the myriad of other differences between the Spider-Men of yore. Time will tell exactly how this will play out, but Marvel had better keep an eye on the internet before any other incredible Spider-Man jokes get scooped right out from under their noses.
