Marvel Comics’ original Super Heroes Secret Wars from 1984-1985 is a massive crossover event known for bringing many fan pleasing moments to life on the page. However, an event in and of itself that has seemed to become overlooked in recent years is the grudge match between the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and the Uncanny X-Men.

Similar to their own social status in the Marvel continuity, the Secret Wars lineup of X-Men, consisting of Cyclops, Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Professor X (who has regained his ability to walk), and new recruit Rogue, are largely sect off from the rest of their superhero colleagues in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #3. Considering that the X-Men are a privately run team of mutants currently aligned with mutant extremist Magneto and a former mutant villain in Rogue, the X-Men are not the most trusted of superheroes at the start of the story-line. Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man is one hero who is not entirely trustworthy of the X-Men as well, coming upon their hideout and seemingly learning that the mutant outcasts are planning to depart the Avengers and Fantastic Four in favor of Magneto.

Spider-Man’s misinterpretation of the X-Men’s intentions is what sets the battle royale between the heroes into motion. While team leaders Cyclops and Storm unsuccessfully attempt to halt the intruder with their powers, Spider-Man keeps heavy hitters Colossus and Rogue at bay with his tough tensile webbing before throwing the adamantium laced killing machine Wolverine aside as if he were nothing. Though Professor X must ultimately step in towards the end and mind-wipe the wall crawler to prevent Spidey from alerting the already suspicious array of other heroes, Spider-Man alone makes swift work of Xavier’s band of mutants.

The Peter Parker depicted in the Secret Wars event is an adult Spidey in the prime of his superhero career, who has fully mastered his superpowers, abilities, and spider sense awareness. Whereas the spider sense may come off as a gimmick of sorts in other comic stories, Secret Wars cements the spider sense as Spider-Man’s true secret weapon in dealing with hostile forces. Using the spider sense to its full advantage, Spider-Man becomes virtually untouchable to the X-Men, dodging the destructive strikes of both Cyclops’ optic blasts and Storm’s weather-based attacks. Even without the spider sense, Spidey’s intense agility skills come into play, especially when up against an equally skilled acrobat such as Nightcrawler.

Though Spider-Man has been mainly considered a street level hero since the character’s inception, there is no mistaking that Spidey is one of Marvel’s top tier superheroes in terms of sheer power and ability. Whether it’s defeating the unstoppable Juggernaut, the devourer of totems Morlun, or the herald of Galactus himself Firelord, Spider-Man will inevitably find a way to come out on top no matter how high the odds may seem. If there is one hero who can be trusted to take on an entire team of X-Men, it’s the Amazing Spider-Man.
