While Spider-Man has had several different relationships over the years, his most intimate one that has gone arguably the furthest has been with Mary Jane Watson. At one point, Peter Parker even proposed and they got married. However, the best marriage proposal involving Spider-Man was from none other than Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat. This particular proposal was so good because it was so hilarious, and Black Cat was the one who did the proposing, catching Spider-Man completely by surprise.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson had been married for quite a long time in the pages of Marvel Comics up until 2008. At that time, Peter’s Aunt May’s life hung in the balance in the aftermath of Civil War, as she had been shot by a bullet meant for Peter. In exchange for saving her life, Peter and MJ made the decision to give up their entire marriage and memories of their time together, making this deal with the demon overlord Mephisto. In effect, this entire period of their lives never happened in the Marvel continuity, and their relationship never happened. However, in more recent issues of Spider-Man, Peter and MJ got back together, and Peter’s even debating about proposing once more (or would this be the first time for him?). However, he hasn’t found the right time yet.

However, back in 2018’s Spectacular Spider-Man #300, Black Cat proposed to Spider-Man. Felicia Hardy has long been an on and off again love interest for Spider-Man, and the two have a very intimate yet complicated relationship. Much of this has to do with Black Cat’s erratic nature, often toeing the line between being a criminal or being a hero. In the short story “The Canary” from writer Chip Zdarsky, Black Cat is being chased by Spider-Man across the rooftops when Spider-Man seemingly gets the drop on her. As she reaches into her bag, she tells Spider-Man that sometimes she thinks she steals things just so Spider-Man will chase her, and he chases her because he, too, is chasing a feeling of something bigger, something that they both could still have. She then gets on one knee as she pulls out a ring, asking Spider-Man to marry her, causing Peter to be completely off guard, which is exactly what Felicia really wants.

Not only does the fake proposal serve as the perfect distraction for Felicia to get away, but Spider-Man’s reaction is great as well and way too funny. Essentially, Black Cat just needed something big to distract him from his spider-sense going off. The move causes him to feel a mixed range of emotions to Black Cat’s savagely clever tactic, and the issue also serves as an effective microcosm for their entire relationship.

This short story shows why it will never work out between Spider-Man and Black Cat. At the end of the day, she just likes the thrill of the chase too much to ever be content with settling down and adopt the straight and narrow life that being with Spider-Man would require. Regardless, this scene is absolutely hilarious, made even more funny due to the fact that this 300th issue was released in the same month as the wedding of DC’s Batman and Catwoman, with Black Cat’s proposal framed in a very similar way to Batman’s own proposal. Who knows? Maybe one day it could work out if Felicia ever decided to change her ways, but even then it seems as though Spider-Man has his heart set on Mary Jane.
