A new series coming from Marvel Comics (and a member of the Black Eyed Peas) will see Spider-Man not being so friendly and becoming much more lethal while battling demons in Los Angeles. The series’ foreboding title and cover art seem to suggest a horrifying possession, causing the Webslinger to go dark when Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man comes to comic book store shelves.

While Spider-Man is typically one of Marvel’s brightest and most positive heroes, it seems this upcoming miniseries will take Peter Parker in the opposite direction. Being part of Marvel Comics’ large publishing focus on Spider-Man for the Webslinger’s 60th anniversary, Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be a five-issue miniseries coming from the Black Eyed Peas’ member Taboo and his brother B. Earl. The brothers will also be joined by artist Juan Ferreyra.

Recently announced by SYFY Wire, Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man will see Peter Parker leaving New York for L.A to face a city full of demons. These demons will be led by none other than the Demon Bear, the dark and very real monster who once haunted the dreams of the New Mutant Dani Moonstar. However, it looks as though the Demon Bear will be unleashed upon the Marvel Universe. Additionally, the accompanying cover art suggests that it may possess Spider-Man himself, motivating a killing spree on par with Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe where Wade Wilson snapped and non-canonically killed every Marvel hero (Frank Castle’s Punisher had a similar series as well). Here’s the new cover art and variants for Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man by Rahzzah, Peach Momoko, Josemaria Casanovas, and Rafael Albuquerque:

SYFY’s announcement also featured statements from Taboo and B. Earl who both shared their excitement as the first Indigenous writers on a Spider-Man title. From Taboo:

Being the first Indigenous writer to co-write this new Spider-Man comic with my brother B. Earl is a huge step in opening more doors for underrepresented talent to shape universally known comic characters. As a lifelong fan of everything Spider-Man, this is a childhood dream come true. To go from collecting toys to penning our own Spidey story that brings our hero to my place of birth, Los Angeles, California — Pasadena to be exact — we are humbled and thankful.”

B. Earl also spoke about the Indigenous and Californian elements they’ll be integrating into the story to create a truly unique and dynamic Spider-Man story:

When Taboo and I found out we had the go-ahead for a new Peter Parker adventure, we began earnestly weaving a tale that would lean into our strengths of pulling from Indigenous storytelling while balancing the intersection of pop culture. Since we’re both in LA, we decided to bring Spidey out to sunny California…but spin a fantastic tale of dark horror that ultimately will turn our friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man DEADLY!

It certainly seems as though Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man will feature Peter Parker like he’s never been seen before. With particular reference to the cover art featuring a bloody-knuckled Spidey standing over so many Marvel heroes, will the iconic Webslinger kill the Marvel Universe thanks to the Demon Bear? Spider-Man fans will just have to wait and see when Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 releases on June 1st.
