Spider-Man‘s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a raving success, and now the character with the highest average Rotten Tomatoes audience score is Spider-Man. Almost every movie in the MCU has a solid audience score in Rotten Tomatoes, so it’s saying something that Spider-Man stands alone at the top, especially considering he’s the only character with solo movies in the MCU whose rights aren’t owned by Marvel Studios.

After a few rough installments across two different versions Spider-Man under Sony, a partnership with Marvel studios relaunched the character in the MCU, where it’s seen huge box office returns and rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Spider-Man: Far From Home was the first Spider-Man movie to cross $1 billion, and now Spider-Man: No Way Home is the second highest-grossing movie of all time behind only Avengers: Endgame, and No Way Home also has the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any live-action Spider-Man movie.

Rotten Tomatoes puts the focus around review scores from critics, but it turns out RT audience scores are a bigger determining factor in a movie’s success, and while the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy isn’t lacking in either department, their average audience score is 93 percent, which is the highest average for any of the MCU sub-franchisees with more than one installment. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has a 94 percent audience score, which is one point higher, but since there’s only one Shang Chi movie, it’s not comparable yet. Spider-Man: No Way Home currently has the single highest Rotten Tomatoes audience score in the MCU at 98 percent (99 percent with verified ticket purchasers, but figures are based on all audiences for parity), while Spider-Man: Far From Home is the third highest-rated with a 93 percent audience score, and Spider-Man: Homecoming brings down the average with the MCU’s 13th highest audience score (still in the top half of the MCU) at 84 percent.

The MCU’s average Rotten Tomatoes audience score is 83 percent, and, every movie has an audience score of 70 percent or higher, other than Captain Marvel at 45 percent. Other than that, every movie in the MCU is rated 70 percent or higher by audiences, and only ten of the MCU movies have an audience score over 90 percent, putting the Spider-Man movies at the top of an already elite franchise.

Spider-Man has always been one of Marvel’s most popular characters, especially compared to the rest of the MCU’s characters, whose comics were always less popular than Spider-Man, assuming they were well known at all before their MCU introduction. Even so, it’s a testament to the films themselves and a bit ironic, considering the films are all distributed by Sony, whereas every other MCU movie since The Avengers has been distributed by Disney. Sony and Marvel Studios still collaborate on Spider-Man movie development and share box office earnings, but it’s interesting to see this unique partnership reach such impressive results.
