Spider-Verse 2 Writers Tease What’s Next For Miles Morales

Spider-Man: Across the SpiderVerse (Part One) writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller tease what’s next for Miles Morales in the sequel. Sony’s 2018 animated comic book movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, followed Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) after he is bitten by a radioactive spider. Not long after that familiar jumping-off point, Kingpin killed Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Chris Pine) before opening portals to alternate universes, which brought different Spider-People into Miles’ universe. With the help of Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), and an array of other, oddball webslingers, Miles was able to stop Kingpin.

Just when viewers thought Miles’ multiversal exploits were at an end, however, Into the Spider-Verse’s post-credits scene set up a sequel by introducing Miguel O’ Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will release on October 2022 before Part Two in 2023. So far, the former is confirmed to include Isaac, Moore, Steinfeld, and Johnson reprising their roles alongside newcomer Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Based on the recent teaser trailer, which saw Miles take on Spider-Man 2099, the next film in the franchise will see Miles travel to alternate realities instead of them coming to him.

In an interview with IndieWire, Lord and Miller teased what’s next for Miles in the upcoming animated sequel. The writers said that by pushing the medium, the webslinger will and can go virtually anywhere. Lord and Miller teased they have the “confidence” to shake up the story in the next film. “It’s been fun to have the confidence … And to go even harder and push the medium even further and take Miles [Morales] to places you couldn’t imagine.”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse redefined Spider-Man cinema, won an Academy Award for Sony Pictures Animation, and no doubt influenced Spider-Man: No Way Home — which, thanks to its multiversal concept, swiftly became the biggest film of last year. Suffice to say, expectations for Across the Spider-Verse are high, and Lord and Miller look to deliver. The first teaser already showed off a different animated style in 2099’s Nueva York next (Earth-928) and every new dimension is said to look and feel radically different than the others, having been drawn by a different artist. That being said, with the multiverse in play, there’s no telling what to expect, and Lord and Miller are free to explore whatever they want.

Nothing rules out Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s (Part One) incorporation of elements and characters from Sony’s live-action Spider-Man films. Theoretically, everyone is a part of the Spider-Verse. For the record, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Jacob Batalon, Zendaya, and Tom Holland have all expressed interest in playing their characters in the sequel. Thanks to the first film, comics, and Marvel’s Spider-Man video games, the popularity of Miles Morales as a character is at an all-time high. After being teased in No Way Home, it’s only a matter of time before Miles makes his live-action MCU debut. So, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, there’s no telling where he’ll go or what universe he’ll cross over with.
