There’s no question Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman has some of the best costumes in Marvel Comics. However, in a stunning new cosplay, the character’s most controversial costume redesign comes to life. While the look wasn’t poorly designed or even an eye-sore, the redesign proved controversial, considering the hero’s previous costumes were met with such acclaim. In the cosplay, cosplayer @AMHCosplays showcases her take on the comic-accurate ensemble, bringing the short-lived costume from the page to real life.

Jessica Drew is a character who hasn’t had too many costume changes since debuting in Marvel Spotlight #32 by Archie Goodwin and Marie Severin. Her original design was pretty solid and was later made even better when Kris Anka redesigned the hero for the 2014 series. In 2019, Marvel Comics revealed Spider-Woman would be starring in her own solo series with the surprise announcement she’d be sporting a new costume too. The redesign by Dave Johnson merged Spider-Woman’s most iconic looks while giving her a darker outfit that was nearly entirely solid black from the chest down. The costume would last until Spider-Woman #11 when the hero dawned her original costume again. Now, the controversial look gets a great cosplay from @AMHCosplays.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

On her Instagram account, AMHCosplays shared her cosplay recreation of the newest Spider-Woman costume. The look brings the key elements from the suit to life, featuring a red spider on the chest, while it is black from the waist down. The Spider-Woman ensemble features the Spider-Man like red webs across her arms and upper body, as well as a mask that’s ripped from Dave Johnson’s redesign. The cosplay costume features an awesome edit from @ramsdesign which makes the hero look like she’s striking a pose on top of a tall New York building.

The new costume redesign in the cosplay might have been met with initial resistance from some readers, but in the 10 issues it appeared in, the look definitely seemed to grow on them. However, Spider-Woman’s original costume proved to be the choice to continue the series with – which was the right call. The classic costume is instantly recognizable.

With Spider-Woman coming to the big screen at some point, it will be fascinating to see which costume is ultimately adapted in live-action. The newest version of Jessica Drew’s costume probably won’t make the cut, but the cosplay from AMHCosplay proves that at the very least, the Spider-Woman costume looks good when brought to life from the pages of Marvel Comics.
