The first few minutes of Spiral: From the Book of Saw have been released ahead of the film hitting theaters this Friday. While most of what has been shown of the Chris Rock led film has made it look as if the ninth movie in the franchise will follow a police procedural format, various trailers and photos have promised just as much scares as the original films. When another serial killer arises, copying Jigsaw’s signature moves, Rock’s Detective Zeke Banks will try to track him down with his reluctant partner, Detective William Schenk (Max Minghella).

Zeke’s father, Marcus Banks (Samuel L. Jackson), is also a detective and all three are set to be ensnared in a deepening mystery reminiscent of the famous serial killer’s games. As most Saw fans know, Jigsaw has long been dead. Instead, Spiral will shine a light on his legacy and impact in the franchise, inspiring a copycat killer to mimic the torturous traps he set for his unwitting victims. Those traps inspired a sub-genre of their own, dubbed “torture porn” in the early-2000s, that has become ubiquitous with the long-running franchise.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Spiral looks to be living up to that classification if it’s opening minutes are any indication. Lionsgate released the opening scene in a new clip that follows one of the copycat killer’s victims into the subway. The three-minute clip follows a police officer ensnared in a trap over the tracks. In order to escape, he must rip his tongue out of his mouth with his own bodyweight or risk getting “railroaded.” Naturally, the clip is as terrifying and gruesome as you can expect. For fans of the long-running Saw franchise, these opening minutes will be just as comforting as they are disturbing. As much as Spiral has been touted as a new chapter for the franchise, it’s clear from this clip that the Saw movies aren’t exactly moving away from what made them so popular with fans. Jigsaw’s deadly traps are nightmare-inducing for some, but they are also what made the films so entertaining for many others. While critics may have never taken kindly to the Saw franchise, it’s clearly a formula that works.

Lionsgate is hoping that that formula will continue to work. Rock has talked about the possibility of a tenth Saw film if Spiral is successful. The studio is also considering a television show based on the franchise. Seeing as Spiral will be the first entry in the franchise since 2017’s Jigsaw, it remains to be seen if the series will be up to par with past movies. If it is, fans can look forward to more grisly traps for years to come.
