To promote his 2022 Christmas musical Spirited, Ryan Reynolds shares a first look trailer filled with a faux iPhoto collage of some of his favorite behind-the-scenes moments. The film, which is going to be released exclusively on Apple TV+ during the holiday season in 2022, wrapped filming in October 2021. The film was written and directed by Daddy’s Home‘s Sean Anders and John Morris with music written by Khiyon Hursey, Sukari Jones, and Mark Sonnenblick alongside Pasek & Paul, the blockbuster musical hitmakers behind The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen.

The film will be a retelling of the classic Charles Dickens novella, A Christmas Carol, and stars Ryan Reynolds as Ebeneezer Scrooge and Will Ferrell as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Mr. Robot‘s Sunita Mani is playing the Ghost of Christmas Past. Although the other roles have not been announced yet, the cast is filled out by Patrick Page, Aimee Carrero, Joe Tippett, Marlow Barkley, Jen Tullock, and Octavia Spencer.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

On his Twitter, Ryan Reynolds celebrated Christmas by sharing a sneak peek at Spirited. Rather than a straightforward trailer, the tease is curated in his inimitable, snarky social media style. The video is a collection of behind-the-scenes images from the film – some real, some satirical – designed to look like an iPhoto album being viewed on his home laptop (complete with a desktop background celebrating his “hero” Will Ferrell). The collage also includes fake Venmo requests from Ferrell demanding he be repaid for his free coffee. Check out the video below:

This is Reynolds’ second viral video created to promote Spirited. This September, he posted a video that was apparently participating in the TikTok trend of singing every harmony in MIKA’s song “Grace Kelly” a cappella. However, after a couple of tries, Will Ferrell jumped in to sow chaos and share the news that they were both on set together working on the musical.

That video also served as a sort of proof-of-concept showing that Reynolds actually has the vocal chops to take a starring role in a musical. Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer are three rather unlikely leads in a musical comedy, which is definitely one of the most intriguing elements of Spirited. While none of them have much experience helming film musicals, the sense of fun that Ferrell and Reynolds have drummed up alongside Spencer’s ability to seamlessly navigate drama and comedy should provide a sweet holiday treat for next year.
