Spongebob Squarepants is one of the longest-running cartoons and is a childhood favorite of many. In a cast full of great characters, Spongebob’s famous best friend Patrick Star is a definite fan favorite as his sweet but naive nature has led to plenty of iconic moments.

In fact, Patrick has become so popular that he was recently given his own spinoff, The Patrick Star Show. In honor of his new side gig, fans on Reddit are looking back on some of Patrick’s best moments on the show that made him famous. While there are far too many classic bits to narrow down, Redditors had some clear favorites.

Patrick Can’t See His Forehead

There are plenty of iconic moments in Spongebob but one that stands out to many fans is when Patrick gets angry. In a scene that contains “an absolute gem of a line,” (as Reddit u/fuzzhead12 described), Spongebob comes to Patrick to vent his anger only to find that Patrick is angry too.

Why is he mad? In a hilariously understated tone, Patrick replies with a problem most people have probably had at some point – he can’t see his forehead. Right after, he is also thrilled to show off his new invention to Spongebob, inflatable pants, which almost immediately explode and leave him naked. It’s a series of quick throwaway jokes, but ones that were sure to make audiences laugh.

Patrick Plays Detective

After Spongebob accidentally enrages the zoo’s giant clam by throwing a peanut at it, Patrick Star goes on the case to catch the culprit. Patrick ends up investigating pretty much everything except the actual clues of the case, while Spongebob frantically tries to avoid suspicion.

After several hilarious fake-outs where it appears that Patrick may have solved the case, he manages to find the incriminating bag of peanuts in Spongebob’s house (only to then be arrested for the crime himself). As Reddit u/shotgun-priest perfectly summarizes, “The Smoking Peanut is one of Patrick’s finest 11 minutes.”

Patrick And The Ghost Pirates

The episode “Shanghaied” gave Spongebob Squarepants fans several of Patrick’s funniest quotes, but, according to Reddit, the highlight of the entire episode may be his most incomprehensible in the show. After being kidnapped by the Flying Dutchman, Spongebob and Patrick are taught how to be ghost pirates.

Patrick’s ghostly yell is a little unconventional, however, as he screams out the now-iconic “LEEDLE LEEDLE LEEDLE LEE.” While it hardly even qualifies as a quote, Reddit u/djsdjjjhjhv2 says “This is by far one of his best lines.” The Dutchman’s exasperation as Patrick continues to yell, less intelligible each time, makes this moment an all-time classic.

Patrick Teaching Man-Ray

Man-Ray is one of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy’s greatest enemies, as well as one of the show’s strangest characters in Spongebob, so teaching him to be good was never going to be easy. Spongebob and Patrick give it all their thought, as they give Man-Ray a lesson on returning a lost wallet.

Despite Man-Ray’s repeated attempts to give the wallet back, Patrick repeatedly denies that it is his, even after being shown his own ID in the wallet. Patrick’s staunch refusals are paid off in the next lesson, where he drops a heavy box on Man-Ray’s foot that supposedly carries all of his wallets. It is a hilarious moment that many users, including Reddit u/numb_toes, said “brought me to tears.”

Wumbology

Few Patrick moments have stuck with viewers the way that this science lesson to Spongebob has. Spongebob has accidentally shrunken Squidward with Mermaid Man’s belt and is skeptical when Patrick’s advice is to set it to Wumbo.

Patrick then goes on a legendary breakdown of the meaning “wumbo,” its origin, its proper use, and the science that even Spongebob cannot deny. Patrick’s complete sincerity and vast knowledge of the word are played perfectly straight too, making the scene even funnier. As Reddit u/The SmugPenguin says, “nothing will ever top ‘wumbo’ or the study of ‘wumbology,’ and it is hard to argue.

Patrick Becoming A Chocolate Salesmen

“Chocolate With Nuts” is a classic Spongebob episode that nearly every fan has seen, and contains so many great Patrick moments that Redditors had a tough time nailing down to just one. The episode featured such gems as Patrick telling a customer he loves them and suggesting that he get naked to sell more chocolate. However, the moment where Patrick implies that he has a less than appetizing use for Barnacle Chips has sparked multiple entire discussions.

While this Reddit user offers an innocent suggestion of “he probably dips into cheese or chocolate,” who knows if fans will ever find out how exactly Patrick uses barnacle chips, or if the answer is one they truly want to know.

“No, This Is Patrick!”

One of the most popular choices among Redditors, including u/JM228844, answered what their favorite moment was by simply quoting the famous line, “NO, THIS IS PATRICK!”

The immortal line comes when Patrick has landed himself a job at the Krusty Krab and is manning the telephone. Patrick is confused why customers keep asking if he is the Krusty Krab, especially after he has repeatedly told them that “no, he is Patrick.” His now-legendary outburst at the final caller is one of Reddit’s favorite Patrick moments of all time.

Inside Patrick’s Head

Audiences finally got a look into Patrick’s mind in the episode “Secret Box,” when he explains to Spongebob why the contents of the box must remain a mystery. Patrick gives an uncharacteristically eloquent description, saying “The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.”

The image in his mind that follows (a carton of milk falling over and spilling) is one of Redditor’s favorite Patrick moments. As Reddit u/skibot99 even says “I think I read somewhere that’s also the favorite moment of Patrick’s voice actor,” so perhaps Redditors aren’t the only ones who love the scene.

Mayonnaise Is Not An Instrument

A moment that fans probably know by heart, Patrick’s contribution to Squidward’s marching band comes in one of Spongebob’s most memorable episodes. In response to whether anyone has ever played an instrument before, Patrick reasonably asks if mayonnaise is an instrument.

After learning that it is not, he raises his hand again, only to be told that horseradish isn’t either. According to Reddit u/PiratesWrath, “The best part is how he says it. He’s just completely serious about it and curious about the musical properties of mayonnaise.” It’s an iconic moment, but some Redditors say what happens next is even funnier.

Patrick And The Trombone

Another one of Reddit’s top picks and one of the funniest moments in animated television, Patrick’s assault by trombone occurs directly after his mayonnaise question. After unwittingly starting a fight with Sandy, Patrick is dragged outside. A blood-curdling scream followed by a long pause leave audiences holding their breath to find out what cruel fate he has met.

When Patrick finally reappears, it is revealed that he has been shoved completely through his trombone, which plays a long, sustained note through his mouth as he sits down. As Reddit user says “Tears of joy were shed the first time I watched that episode,” and they certainly are not the only ones.
