The SpongeBob SquarePants prequel series, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, explains why the famous sea sponge became a fry cook, and true to the essence of the character, it’s a funny story with a touch of irony. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has since become one of the longest-running American animated series as well as the most successful Nicktoon, surpassing popular shows like Rugrats and Hey Arnold!.

The universe of SpongeBob has also expanded to other media, most notably film with three adventures on the big screen, and it’s now exploring other sides of TV/streaming with a prequel series. Titled Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, the series takes viewers back a couple of years to when SpongeBob was 10-years-old and attending the summer sleepaway camp Kamp Koral alongside his best friend Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, with other characters like Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Mrs. Puff serving as camp counselors. While some of the events of the prequel series clash with those of the main one, creating plot holes and continuity mistakes, others have added to the backstory of the characters, which is what happened with SpongeBob and his career as a fry cook.

In the second segment of the fourth episode of Kamp Koral, titled “Kitchen Sponge”, Plankton, who in this series serves as the cook of the camp, needs help in the kitchen and Mr. Krabs, greedy as he has always been, agrees but refuses to pay someone to help Plankton, so he asks the campers who would like to work in the kitchen for free. The only one who enthusiastically offers his help is SpongeBob, and so he joins Plankton, who tries really hard to teach him how to cook very basic and easy stuff, but he can’t – until he suddenly comes up with a soufflé.

Plankton seizes SpongeBob’s skills and comes up with a fancy menu for the camp, and SpongeBob keeps perfecting his cooking skills. This serves as a backstory to SpongeBob’s career as a cook, as the main series hasn’t explained that part of SpongeBob’s life. The very first episode of SpongeBob SquarePants is all about SpongeBob applying for the job of fry cook at the Krusty Krab, and he immediately showed his extraordinary skills, pretty much saving the restaurant from being destroyed by hungry (and angry) anchovies. SpongeBob’s skills as a fry cook, then, are a combination of natural talent and Plankton’s lessons, so in a way, Plankton is responsible for the success of his archenemy’s restaurant.

A lot of events and characters in Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years can be confusing as they mess with what the main show has established, but there are also some that add to it and explain some minor mysteries, as is the case of SpongeBob’s career and how he found his path as a fry cook, though no one could have seen it coming that it would be at summer camp and with Plankton as his teacher.
