SpongeBob SquarePants has a couple of mysteries, the biggest one being what the secret formula of the Krabby Patty is about, and a strange fan theory suggests the real secret is whale vomit, provided by none other than Pearl Krabs. Although Nickelodeon has been home to some very popular TV shows, its most popular and successful one to date is SpongeBob SquarePants. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants made its debut in 1999 and has since become one of the longest-running animated series, and has successfully branched out to other media as well.

For over two decades, SpongeBob SquarePants has taken viewers to the underwater city of Bikini Bottom to meet the title character and his friends (and a couple of enemies) and follow them through all types of adventures and trouble. SpongeBob is often accompanied by his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor and coworker Squidward Tentacles, and his greedy boss Mr. Krabs, with his pet snail Gary joining the fun from time to time. Another main character in SpongeBob SquarePants who doesn’t appear as often as the rest but has won over the audience anyway is Pearl Krabs, Mr. Krabs’ teen daughter who has been the subject of many mysteries and theories due to her being a whale raised by a crab, and some of those theories have taken strange turns.

Pearl’s backstory is a mystery, and the only details known about it is that she was born to Mr. and Mrs. Krabs, the latter believed to have been a whale, and as Mr. Krabs’ only child, she will inherit the Krusty Krab at some point. All this mystery around her backstory and how a crab can be the father of a whale has made way for a variety of theories on Pearl’s possible adoption, the fate of her mother, and more, but there’s one that takes an obscure, strange, and disgusting turn: Mr. Krabs adopted Pearl because she serves a purpose for his business, and he uses her vomit as the secret ingredient of the Krabby Patty.

A theory posted on Reddit tries to explain why Mr. Krabs adopted Pearl taking into account how greedy he is. The author explains that it doesn’t make much sense that someone who loves money and hates wasting it as much as Mr. Krabs does would adopt a child, as that is a pretty expensive move, so there must be something else behind this. The author adds that the reason why Mr. Krabs adopted Pearl is that she is actually useful to his restaurant, and it’s all related to whale vomit, which according to them, it’s “worth a lot” in the real world as it’s used in the perfume industry. As the latter doesn’t really exist in the universe of SpongeBob SquarePants, Mr. Krabs might be using Pearl’s vomit as the secret ingredient of the Krabby Patty, which is why he goes to lengths to keep the formula safe and why he doesn’t seem to mind about all the money he spends on Pearl.

The secret formula of the Krabby Patty is, perhaps, the best-kept secret in SpongeBob SquarePants, and as such it most likely will never be revealed, so fans will surely continue coming up with various theories related to it. As for Pearl, it’s also unlikely all the questions around her backstory will be solved, and while the “whale vomit” theory is strange, in the end, it’s up to every viewer to decide if it makes sense and could be possible or if it’s just a fun idea.
