A lot of strange things happen in SpongeBob SquarePants, and one of the strangest and most curious ones is the son of Plankton and his computer wife, Karen. Nickelodeon has been home to many fan-favorite cartoons for years, but the one that continues to be the most successful is SpongeBob SquarePants, which has been going strong since 1999. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, the show has become the most successful Nicktoon to date as well as one of the longest-running American animated series and has also expanded to other media, most notably film and comic books.

SpongeBob SquarePants takes viewers to the bottom of the ocean, to the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, home to the title character and his friends (and a couple of enemies). The show follows SpongeBob on different adventures, and he’s often accompanied by his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor and coworker Squidward Tentacles, and his greedy boss Mr. Krabs, and they have also confronted a couple of not-so-nice characters together. The main antagonist of the show (though he has also been an ally sometimes, even if briefly) is Plankton, Mr. Krabs’ eternal enemy and the owner of The Chum Bucket, and who has an interesting family life.

Plankton is a genius, but that doesn’t mean that his plans are always successful. Plankton has tried to steal the secret formula of the Krabby Patty for years and his restaurant continues to be a big failure, but one area where he has succeeded (to an extent) is his family, though it isn’t a normal one. Plankton has a wife named Karen, and she’s a waterproof computer who works alongside him at The Chum Bucket and who also helps him come up with plans to steal the Krabby Patty’s secret formula. Karen was built by Plankton and began as a security system, though in other episodes she has been shown as a calculator when she was a baby. Plankton and Karen even had a son at some point: Chip Plankton II, whose whole life was shown in just one episode.

Chip Plankton II made his debut in SpongeBob SquarePants’ season 12 in the episode “Karen’s Baby”. Chip arrived in the mail, and Plankton wasn’t on board with being a father, with Karen telling him it was too late to cancel the order. As Chip was no regular baby, he grew up too fast, much to Karen’s surprise, and so Chip went from being a small calculator to a walking handheld payment terminal, an angsty video game console, a young-adult mobile computer, and finally, an ATM working at the First Nautical Bank, where he plays tricks on Mr. Krabs by not letting him get his money. “Karen’s Baby” has been the first and only appearance of Chip Plankton II, and as it covered pretty much his whole life, it’s implied that he continued working as an ATM and making his parents proud, who continued with their own life and never-ending plans to end The Krusty Krab.

SpongeBob SquarePants has seen a bit of everything in over 10 seasons, and viewers surely never expected Plankton and Karen to become parents, but it’s a fun chapter in the already curious history of Plankton and Karen. It’s unknown if Chip Plankton II will appear again in SpongeBob SquarePants or other media, but at least he made his parents proud.
