SpongeBob SquarePants Theory: The Characters Are All On (Different) Drugs

The characters in SpongeBob SquarePants are like no others, not only physically but also personality-wise, which has made way for a number of fan theories. One of the most popular ones explains the characters act they way they do because they’re hooked on different drugs, with only one character living a clean life.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character – a sea sponge that looks like a kitchen sponge – and his friends Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, his boss Mr. Krabs, his neighbor Squidward Tentacles, and enemy (though to SpongeBob he’s sometimes a friend) Plankton – among other colorful characters. As it happens with most cartoons, the characters have exaggerated personalities, which have made some fans think there’s something obscure going on with them.

There have been many theories trying to “explain” what’s going on with Bikini Bottom and its residents, but there’s one that went as far as to link the personalities of some of the main characters to different drugs – and their effects.

Which Drug Each SpongeBob Character Is Hooked On

For this theory to work, the characters are understood to be really hooked on these substances, as the effects of them are always reflected on their behaviors and personalities. The theory explains that SpongeBob is into shrooms, as he has a “wild imagination,” very much like the mindset of someone tripping on magic mushrooms. SpongeBob can also go from extreme happiness to despair and fear, which the theory compares with a “good trip” and a “bad trip.” Shrooms can also cause euphoria – and that’s something very common in SpongeBob. Up next are Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff, who are hooked on the same drug: cocaine. This substance can make users irritable (like Mr. Krabs when it comes to money and Mrs. Puff when she has to deal with SpongeBob) and paranoid (Mr. Krabs’ paranoia about his secret formula being stolen and Mrs. Puff’s PTSD-like reactions to SpongeBob driving).

Squidward is also part of the group, and he’s addicted to heroin. According to the theory, Squidward’s traits match the behaviors of heroin abusers, which include deceptive behaviors, bad performance at work, avoided eye contact, and mood swings. And then there’s Patrick, who is all about marijuana. Patrick is always relaxed – maybe a bit too much, as he’s also pretty lazy and doesn’t do much. He also eats a lot and all the time, and speaks slower than the rest. The only character that is clean and sober is Sandy, whom the theory explains is “against the others,” which is why she can get very annoyed when visited by SpongeBob and Patrick, as they are usually high.

The characters in SpongeBob SquarePants have very defined quirks and traits, which makes it easy for viewers to come up with all types of theories and “explanations” on why they act the way they do. Of course, it’s very unlikely that the writers behind these characters purposely gave them behaviors like those of drug addicts, but for those who are into “dark” theories related to cartoons, this might be an interesting one.
