SpongeBob SquarePants has introduced many colorful characters from Bikini Bottom and beyond, most of them with mysteries of their own. Such is the case of SpongeBob’s teacher Mrs. Puff, and the biggest question around her is what happened to her husband, Mr. Puff. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has become one of the longest-running American animated series. SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character along with his friends, enemies, and other citizens of Bikini Bottom.

A recurring character that has become a fan favorite is SpongeBob’s teacher at Boating School, Mrs. Puff, a pufferfish that’s very paranoid and has a history of mental instability. It’s unknown if these problems began when she met SpongeBob, the only student that hasn’t passed his driving exam, or if she has always dealt with them. Either way, Mrs. Puff is one of the most interesting and layered characters of the series, and one that holds many secrets about her past.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Mrs. Puff didn’t grow up in Bikini Bottom and moved there when she was already an adult. None of her relatives are still alive and at one point before moving to Bikini Bottom she was married. Mr. Puff has never appeared in the series, except one time when his whereabouts were briefly shown – and it was a pretty sad reveal.

What Happened To Mr. Puff In SpongeBob Squarepants

In the episode “Krusty Love”, Mr. Krabs falls in love with Mrs. Puff and asks SpongeBob what happened to Mr. Puff. It’s then shown that Mr. Puff was captured by humans and turned into a novelty lamp, with SpongeBob saying that Mrs. Puff doesn’t like to talk about it. That was the first and last time viewers saw and heard about Mr. Puff, but some fans find the circumstances around his death to be a bit shady, and have come up with possible explanations on what truly happened to him, based on Mrs. Puff’s actions. As mentioned above, Mrs. Puff has a mysterious past, and at some point she subtly revealed that she has moved to different cities and changed her name. A theory posted on Reddit suggests this has to do with what happened before she moved to Bikini Bottom, and it probably involves her husband.

Mrs. Puff happens to be the character with the largest criminal record in the series, and has shown to be very aggressive, even wanting to hurt others (mostly good old SpongeBob). The author explains that either Mrs. Puff had her husband killed or she did it herself, prompting her to move to another city and start over. A different theory says Mrs. Puff was probably taking a ride with her husband during fishing season and, for whatever reason, she hooked him. While it’s true that Mrs. Puff isn’t the most correct person in Bikini Bottom, it’s unknown if her mental instability began before or after her husband died, so it’s possible that she just moved to another city to try to cope with her husband’s death. There are a lot of twisted theories about SpongeBob SquarePants, and this one might be among the top ones. In the end, it’s up to every viewer to choose what they want to believe about Mr. and Mrs. Puff, and the only thing that’s for sure is that he was turned into a lamp.
