SpongeBob SquarePants has seen a couple of rivalries through the years, and one of the most notable ones is that between Squidward and Squilliam, and SpongeBob’s neighbor has only won twice. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants made its debut on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has since become the most successful Nicktoon, with over 10 seasons and still counting. SpongeBob and company have also expanded to other media, most notably film and streaming, with a prequel series titled Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, further expanding the SpongeBob SquarePants universe.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily underwater adventures of the title character and his closest friends in the city of Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob is often accompanied by his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor and coworker Squidward Tentacles, and his greedy boss Mr. Krabs. The gang has also made a couple of enemies throughout the years, such as Plankton, Mr. Krab’s eternal enemy, and Squilliam, a long-time enemy of Squidward and who is constantly competing against SpongeBob’s friend.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Squilliam Fancyson III is a wealthy and narcissistic guy Squidward met in high school band class, where he quickly became his rival. Physically, Squilliam is very similar to Squidward, only with a unibrow and a fancy maroon robe making him stand out, but when it comes to their achievements, they are complete opposites. Squilliam has succeeded in everything Squidward has failed in, so he constantly looks down upon SpongeBob’s friend and finds pleasure in challenging him in different tasks he knows he’s good at and will most likely win at – and he has succeeded in most, with good old Squidward only winning twice, mostly thanks to his friends’ help.

Squidward and Squilliam have competed against each other in SpongeBob Squarepants a total of six times, with Squidward winning twice and only once ending in a tie. First is the episode “Band Geeks”, where Squidward quickly formed a band to perform at the Bubble Bowl, but the band was a big mess. Seeing Squidward desperate and heartbroken, SpongeBob and the rest worked hard to become a real band, giving a memorable performance and giving Squidward his first win. Then came the episode “Squilliam Returns”, where Squilliam bragged about his success and Squidward lied about having his own restaurant. With the help of SpongeBob, The Krusty Krab was quickly transformed into a five-star restaurant, but when Squilliam asked SpongeBob for his name, he freaked out and destroyed the place, so Squilliam won.

Next was “Fancy House”, where Squidward did his best to turn his house into a fancier one than Squilliam’s, but when the host of the House Fancy show, Nicholas Withers, arrived, his house was destroyed. However, Withers loved it and crowned him as House Fancy Prince, giving Squidward his second win. In the episode “Professor Squidward”, jealous of Squilliam teaching his own class, Squidward impersonated him but got arrested for it, so it was a win for Squilliam. Then came “I Love Dancing”, where Squidward ended up in Squilliam’s play. Squidward failed to do the dance Squilliam taught him, marking another win for Squilliam. Last but not least, in “Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful”, Squidward was forced to do community service for “littering” and Squilliam bragged about his giant statue for cleaning up the town. The statue was eventually destroyed and Squilliam got a ticket, so this one is considered a tie.

Squidward has lost so many times because that’s his burden in SpongeBob SquarePants: the pessimistic character who can’t get a win by himself and needs the help of his least favorite person in order to succeed. Each of Squidward’s wins has been thanks to the involvement of SpongeBob (though he has also contributed to some failures), and it’s to be seen if he will defeat Squilliam again in the near future.
