Squid Game showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted that Gi-hun will be a hero in the second season of the show. While being interviewed by the Associated Press, Hwang recently confirmed that Squid Game season 2 is a go. “There will indeed be a second season,” Hwang stated in the interview, before adding that “Gi-hun will come back; he’ll do something for the world.” The news comes in the aftermath of Squid Game’s massive success on Netflix, where it became the most-watched show on the streaming platform. There are a lot of reasons why Squid Game is so popular, and Gi-hun’s journey during the show is undoubtedly one of them.

Played by Lee Jung-jae, Squid Game’s protagonist Seong Gi-hun starts off as a deeply flawed, down-on-his-luck chauffeur who lives with his mother, overindulges in gambling, and is separated from his ex-wife and their daughter. However, during the mysterious and deadly games that he takes part in, Gi-hun proves himself to be a sympathetic character who has an idealistic side and noble intentions. This is precisely why Hwang’s words regarding Gi-hun’s future heroism are significant.

While Gi-hun doesn’t entirely redeem himself by the end of the first season of Squid Game, he does take steps towards righting some wrongs in his life. One of these steps is his decision to stop the games from recurring. Whether Gi-hun is baited to return to the games remains to be seen, but as always, his heart is certainly in the right place.

At the moment, plot details regarding the second season of Squid Game are vague at best, but the way the first season concludes does leave some breadcrumbs towards where the future of the show is headed. As Gi-hun is waiting to board the plane to visit his daughter in the United States, he decides to call the Front Man and find out more about the games that left so many of his newfound friends dead. Realizing that the answers he seeks won’t be quite so easy to obtain, he chooses to abandon his journey out of South Korea in favor of chasing the Front Man and putting an end to the games.

If and how Gi-hun takes down the Front Man in the new season of Squid Game remains to be seen, but Hwang hinting at Gi-hun “doing something for the world” means that Lee’s compelling character will perform an act of heroism at some point. This does make sense in terms of Gi-hun’s ongoing character arc, which has yet to include a true redemption for the lone survivor of the games. Of course, Gi-hun also has considerable financial means at his disposal now, so it won’t be merely his idealism and his desire to do the right thing carrying him towards fulfilling his potential as a hero in the second season of Squid Game. As long as Gi-hun doesn’t become the new Front Man, things ought to work out just fine.
