Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk says seasons 2 and 3 are being discussed. A survival thriller, which focuses on deeply indebted individuals that compete in fatal variations on children’s games for a big cash prize, Squid Game took the world by storm when it debuted on Netflix back in September of this year. The nine-part South Korean series nabbed hundreds of millions in viewership within the first weeks of its debut, sparking discussions about its narrative and themes and leading to a rejuvenated interest in international dramas.

Given its impact, and given how the Squid Game season 1 finale left the door open with a cliffhanger of sorts, there were almost immediate questions as to whether the thriller would continue. Hwang has been careful in advising fans to temper their expectations, explaining that the series was the end result of work that had been ongoing for many years. At the same, however, the creator has indicated that Squid Game season 2 will happen at some point. In new comments, Hwang notes a potential third installment could be in the cards as well.

In an online interview with Korean broadcaster KBS, Hwang restated that discussions remain ongoing about bringing back Squid Game for a second season. But, adding to that, the writer-director also said those talks include the possibility of a Squid Game season 3. Previous remarks have mainly focused on the immediate future and, specifically, a second outing to the hit series. You can read Hwang’s quote, via the translation of The Korea Times below.

“I’m in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”

It’s hardly a surprise that executives would reach out to Hwang for more episodes of Squid Game. The thriller not only dominated its Netflix counterparts, but it’s likewise arguably the biggest show of the year and inspired numerous cultural trends and products because of its widespread appeal – from costumes to Funko pops and themed cafes. It has turned much of its cast, including Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung, into stars in their own right. With so many new shows and movies debuting and, just as swiftly, disappearing among the myriad of viewing options available, a bonafide global sensation like Squid Game is a relatively rare thing.

But, of course, financial success and product opportunities are hardly reason enough to continue a story. In fact, just on their own, they’re quite the opposite. Squid Game was something of a passion project for Hwang, with characters based on people he knew in his own life, and it took a long time to reach audiences. There’s reason to worry that more seasons of the survival thriller will lose sight of what made the first nine episodes so compelling. But if Hwang is afforded the space and the time to work on the follow-ups, there’s a chance that the iconic show will get even better as it goes along.
