Star Trek: Picard‘s Borg Queen actor Annie Wersching shared a BTS photo on social media featuring her and Patrick Stewart filming the new season. The popular Star Trek antagonist made their debut in the 1996 movie Star Trek: First Contact, portrayed by Alice Krige. The Borg Queen is set to have a recurring role throughout Star Trek: Picard season 2.

Introduced in Star Trek: First Contact, the Borg Queen is seen as an avatar of the Borg’s collective consciousness and overall intelligence, leading the forces of the cybernetic organisms throughout the Collective hive mind. While the Borg were introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Queen debuted later in the film and has since appeared throughout other installments in the sci-fi franchise, including Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Previously portrayed by Krige and Susanna Thompson across First Contact, Voyager, and Lower Decks, Wersching was revealed to be cast as the Borg Queen on September 3, 2021. Following the Borg Queen’s return in Star Trek: Picard‘s season 2 premiere, Wersching has shared a behind-the-scenes photo from production on the show.

Taking to her personal Twitter, Wersching shared a photo taken with Stewart alongside a short message celebrating the first episode’s release. In Wersching’s photo, she and Stewart are in costume, smiling together for the camera on a brightly lit set during the production of Star Trek: Picard season 2. In her tweet, Wersching joked that Picard and the Borg Queen would never be seen smiling together in the canon of the show, stating it was an honor and a privilege to work alongside the legendary actor. Wersching also promoted the release of Picard‘s second season, telling fans the season 2 premiere is now available on Paramount+. Check out Wersching’s original post below.

The Borg Queen’s face isn’t the only returning character, as Whoopi Goldbergs’s Guinan return in Picard season 2. Invited personally by Stewart to return, Goldberg’s comeback marks the character’s first appearance since Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 where she attended the wedding of Jonathan Frakes’ and Marina Sirtis’s Captain William Thomas Riker and Counselor Deanna Troi respectively. John de Lancie also returned as the extra-dimensional, almost omnipotent being Q, making his debut in the first episode of the second season. The character appeared to Picard at the end of “The Star Gazer,” matching his own appearance to how Picard has aged and giving him a foreboding warning regarding the episode’s conflicts.

While Stewart teased an ambiguous Stark Trek: Picard ending, season 2 has already raised many questions about the dangers the Starfleet veteran faces. While the Borg Queen’s sudden return and surprise appeal to the Federation may have taken fans by surprise, the return of Star Trek‘s most notable antagonists is sure to please fans. Wersching has joined a long line of stars to portray the Borg Queen, and her post is a welcome way to show her arrival in Star Trek: Picard.
