The first images from Star Trek: Picard season 2 episode 5 show the return of series favorite Brent Spiner as a new character. Patrick Stewart stars as the titular character, a former captain of the USS Enterprise from the critically-acclaimed series Star Trek: The Next Generation. The current season of Picard has treated fans to cameos of classic characters from the older series, such as Whoopi Goldberg as the El-Aurian bartender Guinan and John de Lancie as the extra-dimensional trickster Q. The newly released images tease the return of another familiar face.

Season 2 of Picard started with a bang when the retired admiral was called to the USS Stargazer to investigate a deep space anomaly created by the Borg Queen. Joined by his ragtag crew from Season 1, Picard was inadvertently sent to an alternate timeline by Q where a tyrannical Confederation of humans runs the universe. Assisted by the captured Borg Queen, the team was sent back in time to the year 2024 to find a being called “The Watcher” to correct the timeline. Now stranded in the 21st century, with the world on the verge of collapse, the group finds themselves split apart and racing against time to save the future.

Newly released images by Paramount+ (via Trek Movie) from Star Trek: Picard season 2 episode 5, titled “Fly Me to the Moon,” tease the return of Brent Spiner to the series, but this time as a new member of the Soong family. Spiner first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation as Lieutenant Commander Data, the synthetic life form that made the actor famous. Check out the images below:

Spiner previously appeared in Season 1 of the Picard series as the doctor Altan Inigo Soong, the human son of Noonian Soong, the scientist who created the Soong-type androids to include Lieutenant Commander Data. Altan sequestered himself on the planet Coppelius after a ban on artificial lifeforms following the Zhat Vash attack on Mars. Spiner made another appearance as a member of the family in the 2001 series Star Trek: Enterprise as Dr. Arik Soong, the great-grandfather of Noonian Soong.

Although the full identity of Spiner’s upcoming Soong family member remains unknown, the character will probably be another doctor. Spiner speaks to a panel of three doctors in what could be a review board in three of the images. The doctor positioned at the center of the panel, Dr. Diane Werner, is played by Back to the Future star Lea Thompson, the director of this season’s episodes 3 and 4. With the cyberneticist Noonian Soong being born in the 23rd century, Spiner’s new character could be a distant ancestor that perhaps began the family’s obsession with artificial intelligence and synthetic life.
