Up-close looks at the costumes for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reveal beautiful detailing that updates the classic Starfleet look. Officially announced to be in development in 2020, Strange New Worlds is a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery season 2. The popularity of characters like Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Spock (Ethan Peck) fueled fan interest in a potential series involving their continuing arcs, and Paramount+ sought to jump on the opportunity it provided. Production took place last year, and now Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ in May, on the same day that Star Trek: Picard closes out season 2.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Picking up with Pike and the USS-Enterprise, Strange New Worlds will take on an episodic format similar to Star Trek: The Original Series. It will follow Pike and the Enterprise’s crew as they embark on various exploratory missions throughout the galaxy. Rebecca Romijn joins Mount and Peck in returning from Discovery; beyond that, Strange New Worlds boasts a cast of franchise newcomers. The series stars Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Jess Bush, Melissa Navia, and Bruce Horak.

Aside from some stray glimpses here and there, Paramount+ hasn’t revealed too much of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just yet. However, thanks to Danny Sullivan on social media, fans can get some up-close peeks at the characters’ costumes. Currently on display in the museum aboard Star Trek: The Cruise, these costumes feel very reminiscent of the original Starfleet uniforms when looked at from far away. Get closer, though, and you can see all the fine details that update the iconic look.

Paramount+’s Star Trek shows have drastically built upon the franchise’s past both when it comes to aesthetics and storylines. In some instances, this has drawn criticism from longtime fans. However, with Strange New Worlds, the streamer has the chance to create something new while really harking back to the franchise’s roots. Between the inclusion of TOS characters like Spock and Uhura (Gooding) and these familiar yet updated costumes, it really feels like Strange New Worlds is the truest successor to the flagship show that has emerged in years.

Hopefully the next thing to arrive from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be a trailer. Though a small bit of footage has been released via behind the scenes featurettes and Paramount+ promos, fans have yet to truly get a glimpse of what Strange New Worlds will be like. The early looks have been promising, but only time will tell if this show is what fans have been hoping for.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres Thursday, May 5 on Paramount+.
